Hi everyone,
From looking at this weeks build diary, it seems that the middle gun deck is placed on the support strips with glue only.
I am looking to make it a little more sturdy and was thinking of getting some dowel rods, or similar sized wood and installing a load of 'pillars' under the support strips so that the middle deck will have some more strength when pushed down onto the strips.
What do we reckon?

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom, what size dowelling would you say your going for?
i dont know what weapons will be used in ww3 but ww4 will be sticks and stones.

just been out to Focus and got some 6mm diameter dowelling that should do the job nicely I reckon. 3 quid for a length that only just fit in the car LOL

Fitted one or two now and the lengths for mine are 21mm to fit under the support strips. Maybe this will vary with each model?

Ill take some photos as it progresses and will upload later on!

Cheers everyone!

Here we are; the strips are now very sturdy and I think it will be much easier to fit the middle deck if there is a strong solid surface for them to glue to. I found the strips before we a little too flexible for my liking and I had visions of breaking some of them whilst fitting the deck!
Also, as I am hoping to add real planks instead of the simulated pencil ones, it will be easier to tap some nails in to create a realistic looking deck!

Very good idea, might be worth the effort considering the supports look at bit in the thin side, will have to wait and see when we get the parts through.

Hi Shipmates! BigGrin

Here is two pictures showing the supports on the gun deck. Just a little shaping to do on the lathe, then square the ends and your got it.

Just been looking a few pictures of Mr T's build and wonder if the ply decks will be strong enough and the fact there will be no weight on this deck?

Just thinking aloud here.

Good point, but for those building the Gundeck version a little bit of extra strength maybe good, especialy if scratch building some parts means pushing pins or such into the deck?!?!?!?!BigGrin BigGrin

just finished the last of the pillars and i must say the strips are a damn sight stronger now, no more flexibility when pressing down trying to fit the middle deck!

I would definitely recommend it if you are looking to make it a bit more sturdy and especially if you are thinking of putting real deck strips instead of drawing them on.

I wonder if Dag will be supplying the Fire Exit signs. I want it to look authentic for this money.

Hi z8000783! Laugh

Nice one! John. You'll only need one if you what it up to date with the last refit and to conform with health and safety. Flapper

Guys, I hate to say it but I need a lathe. Can anyone recommend one because I think we need to firm up the deck support.
PS> Lonestar - glad to see you're still onboard.

Hi Artful Bodger, with your name I am mightly surprised you haven't got one already!!!

Tomick has been recommending the Proxon DB250 as ideal for the scale of modelling that we do. I bought one for my birthday and think it is a fantastic bit of kit. I just need the time to play with it!

Just be mindful that there is an end to end slight deck camber, i.e. the decks don't run flat end to end.
