Hi everyone Well if you've seen my "Illustrious ideas" post over the last month then you will know all about this, so, it's finally time to begin the build - and about time you say
I won't go into any of the plans I have or about the additional details, box contents etc - all this can be seen here -

Due to the fact that I will be fitting fibre optic lighting to the flight deck I had to completely re-arrange the build order.
I can split this build into 3 main parts, the flight deck, the hull and hanger interior and the Island.
The Island is by far the most complex part build and I will be saving this till last, mainly due to fact that 90% of the etch is used on this part too. It is basically a very detailed model all on it's own.
So, starting with the hull and flight deck -
First job was to decide if any of the lifts were going to be lowered - I chose to have the stern most lift lowered and the forward one raised so first glued in the lift cover to the front opening.
I drilled the 1mm holes for the fibres right next to the molded lights in the flight deck plastic,this ensure they were placed accurately
- the raised lights were then sanded off along with the whole deck to give a rougher texture before priming.
I needed to paint, decal and weather the deck first as I won't be able to do any of that with the fibres fitted, and I can't fit the deck to the hull until the fibres are in place, this is what I meant by having to change the order of the build.
Here is the deck with a coat of light grey, with a slight tinge of brown mixed in to give a more toned down look
After a coat of pledge is sprayed on I started the immense job of the decals. There are around 60 on the deck and some are 1mm white lines which were very tricky to get lined up. I used decal fix for these as I really didnt want these coming off again.
I left the decals overnight after a couple of layers of matt cote to seal them in. During that time I put together the few parts that made up the hanger deck.
Next job was to overspray the decals with a filter of the deck colour, a couple of very thin coats did the trick and it does look more like the box art now with the markings faded out.
Should point out that all I need to do now is "poke out" the the drilled holes to clear the paint / decals etc

Great start Steve, looks really good.  I have one in my stash along with a Tamiya Enterprise but i didn't realise there was so many decals on that flightdeck. Will be watching your progress on this. Al

Brilliant start Stevie, the toning down of the decals works a treat! Have you worked out how to motorise the helo rotors yet! Will be watching this one closely! Thanks for all the interest guys Done a bit a more to this but some of the pics I have been taking have been useless, my wife has gone to Turkey wit her mum and taken the best camera  the nerve of the woman  I have fitted all the fibres to the deck light holes so this can be put aside for a while. Next is to concentrate on the hull as I really want to get the halves together so I can fit the deck and sort the led routing out. I'm fitting all the weather deck etch at this stage so I can prime and paint the hull in one go. I had to cut out 15 holes to remove the plastic ventilation grills and replace with the etch. Although these are very slightly recessed on the real thing the instructions say to fit these flat to the outside. The inside of the grill is to be backed with white plastic card but I will fit this after painting. Also fitted the stowed entry walkways and some of the Atlantic boat details. Actually, just had a thought, think it's best I sand down those rims round the vents to let the the etch sit a bit flatter. Only fitted 3 so I'm onto this next Steve

I have gone against the instructions again as they want the hull halves to be built around the hanger deck, I noticed that there was nothing stopping the hanger deck being dropped into the assembled hull haves last. The real benefit of this is that I was able to do all the etch railings and grills on the hull and I can spray this as one assembly with absolutely no masking required. The pics below show the size of the hull, that an A2 cutting mat not an A3 so it's 2 ft long. Next will be getting the main hull filled, primed and sprayed before getting the hanger deck in there and then the leds can be sorted out. Cheers Steve stevie_o attached the following image(s):

While I'm waiting for my new paint to arrive for the main hull colour I decided to do some fibre and led work. All the fibres are in place now and I have also fitted some through to the boat decks / weather deck bulkheads for what I think will be very subtle lighting. Im going to fit amber and warm white leds to these. The runway lights in pairs are going to be bright white and a row of reds at each end. The lights in the last pic are just to give an idea of what im trying to do, that's just sunlight in the fibres there but it shows how it will look in the end The final pics show all the aircraft that will appear on this model, 12 harriers - one taking off, one on the lift and 10 at the stern. 2 merlins and 2 sea kings on deck and one in the hanger (the hanger one is the one with the kit plastic rotors). Once I have the right paint for the hull these 3 parts can be fitted together at last Steve stevie_o attached the following image(s):
