Issue 15 came today. Now assembled and glued together. Part on ship is only dry fitted for look. Those still to make, you might find you'll need slight filing of notches when fitting the two curved struts. I did, you might not. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Hi George,
Great work to date on the launch. You are certainly paving the way. Well done.
I've not used an optivisor, but as a suggestion you may also want to consider a range of desk mounted magnifiers with built in lights that are used for needlework. Size and types vary according to your budget. You can also get attachments for floor mounting (on wheels) but these are at the top end of the price range. I know of a place locally in Victoria Park that sells them. You can also try online. Have a look at the Scissorman. Daylight Company seems to be one of the main suppliers, but I'm sure there are others as well.
I use a magnifier that has a doughnut shaped fluro. The bonus of the magnifying lamp is that the casting of shadows over the work piece in your hands is virtually minimal. There is also minimal heat radiating from the lamp. There is a protective covering so that you cannot damage or touch the fluro. The magnifier does tend to fog at first on very cold days / evenings when you breathe over it, but this goes away after a few minutes. (Makes for a good birthday / Fathers Day present - possibly?).
Just thought I would put this to you as an alternative for consideration, if you have not done so already.
Regards,
Adam

Adam Hi Adam. First thanks for your kind comments very much appreciated. Regarding magnifier with light. Yes that's certainly what I'm after. A desk top type will suit or a really good optivisor. I will contact the Companies you mentioned and see if they have a catalog range they can email me. I certainly need something in a hurry. Regards George. PS tried to PM you and Brex on your PM's re planking Float A Boat, but all coming back to me as messages. Won't let me delete George1 from Who To. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Ok sounds great will check the PM in a moment. Also found http://www.northeasterns...r%20NESL%20-%20Copy.pdf
which is worth a look and the Model Rail Road Craftsman at Blacktown NSW still operates and is a stockist but not sure what is stocked.

Hi George I just got onto the web site for Float a Boat and went to the April 2014 newsletter out of curiosity and found an article about the blocks (2nd page). They look very impressive and I would have gladly used these on previous models. I think they are worth a second look. I like them!

They look fabulous for model ships. Probably will purchase when we get to have to make them up. You can get from 1 to 3 rope channels with them. And already coloured. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Hi George
I see you got the stern assy together and as mine, there was no need for the little packers at the joint of the struts 45 and upper deck piece 42. The struts were a bit tight but I managed to get them together without filing. Your ships boat looks great, I'm doing mine the same colour but haven't got around to it yet. I just received the paints from Float-a Boat, they had a bit of trouble with FEDEX. Yes Float-a-Boat has a good website, I'll be making more purchases from there.
Regards JohnP

Hi John. Thanks for compliments. Yes Float A Boat has lots of other items like planking if you decide later to change colour of planking supplied if you had ideas of staining hull later. I'll PM you a list of relevant planking you can get there. Just highlight and copy for your records. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Hi . If any of the experienced builders look in like Alan, Karl, Andy, Mike, Jonny or anyone else could you kindly answer my query below; Regarding the brass mesh that goes in bottom of launch after blackening re Burnisher do these pieces have to be shaped at all. I can't see any templates. The pieces as issued fit into the bottom of the launch OK but encroach on the foot boards by about 10 mm both ends when other ends in position. I noted in Tomick's Official Build Diary SOTS they appear to only encroach on foot boards about 5 mm and look like there's been some cuts from sides of mesh as well. Any help greatly appreciated as I want to glue into place once blackened. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

hi george, yes the brass mesh will need to be trimmed,I used a pair of scissors to trim, because of the slight differences in the building of the launch, some lee-way has to be allowed. hope this helps you. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

Hi Karl. Thanks for coming to my aid again. It is greatly appreciated. I will look again at Tomick's build re mesh and try to trim to the same shape as he has in bottom of launch. Have now burnished and glued in mesh in bottom of launch. Not perfect but OK.Milky look bit only camera flash effect. doesn't appear visually. Also painted bottom of launch ivory white. Needs slight touch up stern corner. Angle of Photo makes keel look twisted, it isn't and is quite straight. If you haven't put in mesh yet and trying to burnish read tip I left on bb1949's thread. It might be a help. Regards George Building HMS SOTS
