Starting to look good magpie1832, my next parts (9) are on the way.

I have noticed you have not shaped the first two formers on the bow, do the planks come in to full contact???.
Regards

Rob

Hi Rob, Thanks for your comment BigGrin

I have managed to get planks to sit completely flat on those formers with filling the gaps with balsa and shaping. Here is a straight down view. I am also working on trying to get the straightness down the side from the dodgy ribs..

Also when did you get your sapele planks on your issues 5,6 or 7. I'm only on issue4. Due next two issues in 2 weeks hopefully.

Thanks Chris ..

Thanks a lot! I must say your build is looking incredibly good!!

So for the tanganyka, you first stained with medium oak stain, then once dry, with antique oil?

Thanks again mate,
Tom

Yes, you just get little on the edges as tanganyka is orangy anyway, you just need a little of the dye then antique oil. which protects it.

The bottom strip is bare the next one up is stained along the edges, next again stained and oiled and the top is plain wood but oiled.

Thanks Chris..

Thank you ever so much, thats really helpful! thank you also for the pictures.

If it is ok with you, I would like to re-create the exact colour scheme and method of planking you have used, as I think it is really brilliant and works really well.

I was just wondering, bit of a daft question, but I want to get it right; which products for the staining + oil did you use? (cuprinol, wilkos etc). I imagine they will vary slightly with different brands.

Thanks again for all of your help,
and well done with your build!

Hi All,

Thanks for your Heads up..BigGrin
Here I have lined the inner of the ship first instead of after planking the hull. I think it is easier to get them lined up better. Just my opinion..

I have not smoothed the joints on these as looking at interiors of ships they are not smooth joints. I have chosen to paint the inners white on the lower deck as the Jotika prototype Surprise has mentioned in there research that the lower decks where white washed.

Thanks for looking Chris.

Hi All,

Here I have started to lay the planks. Its took me a while to work out the correct starting place an d position so I can get a nice straight flow.

Very nice in deed magpie1832, I was going to ask you about the pins the other day, do you intend to use them on the Victory build instead of nailing the planking to the ribs? Keep the pictures coming mate...been a sort of silent follower up until now...ruddy good work mate...ThumpUp

Hi All Thanks for the comments, :) BigGrin

I am trying to get away without using pins on all the planking on both Ships. Most modellers only pin to tack them in place then pull them out. The deagostini pins are not brass only coloured brass. Once they are snipped and sanded they are silver and prone to rust. I found that out on the San Fran 2.

Planking, If you are choosing not too pin, then you can only do a couple of planks every 2-3 hours if using Alphatic Glue. But you get good finish. Pinless on natural wood finish is very nice especially in this sized ship too.

I'm dreading the gunports too. The instructions are really good(LOL LOL )not.
cut hole here is round about what they say...

Anyways... Here is the latest instalment of a few more planks. I had to rip off 4 off them and redo them this morning because I wasn't happy with how they lay and where they finished on the front. So I've got the replacement on now and am pleased with them now..lol..

that planking is outstanding.

in new to the craft and been planking the endeavour longboat over last 2 days, got last of the first layer done today, all i can say is im glad there is a second layer because it is a mess! going to use a fair amount of filler to give it a smooth surface for second layer.

im guessing the top and bottom edges of your planking have been sanded to an angle that corresponds with the plank above/below?

also if you have any tips for planking i'd appreciate the pointers.

your build is looking amazing though. excellent work

Hi magpie, quick obvious tip when you have cut out your Gun Ports before you file them to size don't for get to protect your decking from the file.

Fantastic planking Magpie! I envy your ability to do it without pins! I'm going to try and avoid using pins for the sapele planks after seeing how well yours has come out!

Keep it up!

Jonny.

Thanks Rob,Jonny and Secretreeve for your comments.BigGrin

I'm sure you can achieve what you want without out pins, Just remember to only do a couple of planks a time and use alphatic glue which has great grab. Measure every plank first before you put any glue near it.

@Secretreeve, I have beveled the top edge of each Plank ever so slightly but more on sharper curves so I can get a nice joint. And don't try and bend the plank where it won't go, let it lie where it wants to go give or take a little of side to side to but up to next joint.

Here are my latest Pic's...
