Just in case anyone is wondering about the chains hanging down in front of the gunports, its not a problem as later in the build these chains are routed and pinned to the side of the ports.... Cool Cool

Stunning looking ship Alan, love the fact you did't paint the hull, i think it looks so much better than the white.

Thank you for your very kind comments Gibbo, so much appreciated... Cool Cool .. Way back yonder when I first saw this ship and decided to have a go, the white hull just looked to me to be simply unrealistic, it was then I decided to change the 2nd planking layer by using walnut strips..... Like you I am so pleased I did cause I am so happy with the outcome... looks better for real, photos don't do it justice..... This is simply a personal opinion and choice as those who have decided to go with the white hull have produced some excellent builds and I respect their choice... thanks again.... Cool Cool

Hi Alan,

I cant express how awesome your build is. Myself and my father are both building SOTS and we now both follow your build very closely. The perfection you have used and the time you have put into this have really paid off.

Thanks for the "manual" that we can use BigGrin

Hi CU, I can only feel truly humbled by your most kind and gracious comments, they are so very much appreciated....Cool Cool .. It pleases me no end to know the build and the diary are helping both you and your father build the SOTS. The build diary was never intended to be as large as it is, it is just the way things have developed.. I believe the more diaries there are then the more members we will attract, that in turn will add quality and variety to the forum showing a wide variety of builds with all the associated tips and techniques....Cool Cool .. Will continue to follow your build, not sure if your father is doing a diary too but if he is then I'm following that one as well.. Keep contributing the way you are and I wish you the best of luck with your build.....Cool Cool .. Thanks again....

Alan

Thanks George, the colour combinations is something I have given a great deal of though and believe I am achieving something that is not too outlandish... Cool Cool .. Don't be too concerned about how far you have to go yet to get to this stage, main thing is to enjoy the experience, take your time and you will end up with a build to be proud of.... It's a journey after all and you are now well on your way.....

Thanks again for looking in and commenting Stevie. Think the neatness comes from simply being patient, careful and not rushing things.. Your builds are also testimony to that....Cool Cool

Issue 97 now well underway to being complete, this started with the construction of the foremast lower fighting top... Started by cutting all the pieces free from the fret and cleaning all the edges clear of all black ash... Glued the pieces of the fighting top together as laid out in the mag instructions, this was pretty straight forward... After applying the top ring everything was weighted down to ensure it all glued together squarely... When dry, gave the fighting top including the crosstrees and the cheeks 2 coats of Medium Oak stain.. Painted the outer edges the same maroon colour as used on the hull strip finishing off with 2 coats of satin clear varnish... Cool Cool .. All these pieces will now be placed in a marked for later use..

Next task was clean out all the holes on the 55 deadeyes and to stain them with walnut stain, it's here I may have a slight problem. Am hoping there are a couple of deadeyes spare with the issues as two I received were split in half, if not then I can always raid some of my other kits as a stop gap... Moved on to painting the mast cap 2 coats of matt black, cleaned off the supplied buckets of any casting residue, gave them a coat of metal primer followed by a coat of walnut brown paint... buckets hopefully will be completed tomorrow.... Cool Cool .. Happy building all..

Regards

Alan
