For those who have just picked up or about to receive issue 98, check the contents.... Just picked up mine to find am 2 half cannons missing, should be 12 and only got 10... Crying . Minor hiccup that will need to be resolved..... Will see if the newsagents can do anything tomorrow....

Thanks for this info. I have found some mistakes in my past issues, but it was something I could resolve myself.

Today I finished the work contained in issue 98.. Started by preparing the forecastle curved pinrail... As in other pinrails the holes for the pins had to be enlarged slightly and I did this using a drill bit... Left the piece in the fret while enlarging the holes, this way there was less chance of the piece snapping on me... Cut the pieces free from the fret, removed the ash from all the edges. Applied 2 coats of walnut stain, glued the pieces together and gave it a coat of satin varnish for protection... When dry then fitted in position...

Next, moved onto preparing the half cannons and pinrail pins... With 2 half cannon missing had to be content in preparing the remainder. Newsagent didn't give me a feeling of confidence in resolving the problem so am going to order a back issue of 98 from the DeAg shop, less hassle that way, along with the display stand.... Removed all imperfections using a fine file, applied a coat of metal primer and when done painted the cannons with matt metal black and the pins with walnut wood colour....When dry, applied coat of matt varnish and glued the pins in place into the pinrail... Cut 10 pieces of dowel as per the mags instructions and glued into the back of each cannon.

Next task was to fit the cannons into position.... The important part in fitting the cannons is to ensure they are fitted exactly in the centre each gun port... Everyone will have their own method of achieving this, mainly through the use of templates... for me I decided to trust in my own eye, if it looked right then I was happy. First drilled a pilot hole in each port along the port side of the hull, to this I inserted the trusty cocktail stick and this gave me an overall visual representation on how the gun barrels would look... Once happy I enlarged each hole with a 2mm drill bit, this was all done using a pin vice, thought a power tool would be too aggressive on the gun supports.. Finally fitted the 10 gun barrels checking all were in line.... Am happy with how it looks overall.... Happy building all...

Regards

Alan

Thanks Martyn, appreciated.... Normally I would contact CS for a resolution but unfortunately this is the only build where I haven't subscribed, ordered through the newsagents who don't fill me with confidence they would resolve the issue quickly..... Simpler and less hassle just to order a back issue.... Thanks again..

Issue 99 now complete. This started with preparing and fitting of the 12 half cannons to the starboard side, preparation and fitting was as described in my post covering issue 98.. Moved onto working on the gunwales for the bow platform. Cut two strips and using steam from a kettle gently bent the strips to conform to the contours of the bow. Once happy with the fit, glued and clamped in place... Cut small 2mm blocks from the remainder of the strips and glued in place directly above each of the uprights. Using superglue gel, attached a truck on top of each 2mm block.. Gave the gunwales a coat of primer followed by 2 coats of gold...Cool Cool

Next task was the construction of the two cranes, cut two pieces as per the magazine instructions and marked the measurements on opposite sides. Using a 0.8mm drill, drilled 4 holes half way through, turned the pieces over and drilled the 4 holes from the other side. This ensured the holes on both sides were evenly lined up.. Using a sharp blade, cut channels between the top and bottom holes and cleaned up the grooves with the point of a fine file.. Gave the pieces 2 coats of walnut stain, coat of varnish and fitted an eyelet on the underside of each piece.... Cut the head off 2 pins, drilled a pilot hole in the centre of each piece at the end, glued and inserted the pins. This ensured a more secure fastening to the hull.. Glued the cranes in position following the photos in the magazine..Cool Cool

Found here the magazine shows 10 eyelets having been fitted to the front of the bow platform yet there is nothing in the instructions relating to the fitting of these. Prepared 10 eyelets and fitted in position, following again the photos provided in the magazine.... Cool Cool ..

Happy building all

Regards

Alan
