Hi everyone,
I've recently joined this forum as I've ordered the HMS Victory.
I've read a lot about using dry docks to insure true and strait bulkheads.
Are there any diagrams available?
I'm looking to see how long and wide the base should be, proper materials to construct the dry dock, ect.
I'm very new to this ship building and have always wanted to tackle a build project like this.
I just want to make sure I get off to a good start.
Best, Barry

Hi Barry

Welcome to the forum and the HMS Victory. I'm new to this ship building, the Victory being my first so some of the other guys will give you their sage advice I'm sure.

I used a length of 18mm plywood measuring 30" x 10". I use the 18mm as there is no way it is going to warp where a piece of thinner wood might.

I then used right angle rigid joints

https://www.google.co.uk...right+angle+rigid+joint

to ensure that the ship is held straight and true. I screwed these onto the plywood at intervals that are between the ribs having created a straight line for the false keel to sit on. I think it really is crucial to have this process right. I'm up to issue 19 now and have just laid the lower and mid decks and committed myself to gluing it all together and it all fit like a charm.

My build log has some pics but like I said there are some very experienced builders on here that will be able to add to this I'm sure.

I look forward to seeing your progress.

All the best

Mike

Hi Barry
There are many ways to build a keel clamp board to keep everything in line. If you are looking for something simple then you just need a piece of 15-20mm plywood and some 4cm 90 deg angle brackets, around 10 will do.

The ply should be the length of the keel, width is up to you - mine is only 10cm wide and has served well for a few builds.

Mark a centreline down the length of the ply and screw in your angle brackets in pairs (5 pairs should do) evenly spaced along the whole length, the gap between them should be a tight fit so use the keel ply as a guide before marking the screw holes.

This is the simplest way but you can expand on this and have one side of the brackets fixed to the board and the other side adjustable which will then suit different thickneses of false keel.

Hope this helps

Thanks Mike and Steve!
Mike, I'll check out your build for tips, and Steve, what can I say! Your build is a masterpiece! I can only hope that my build is 1/2 as nice as yours. I'll be sure to take my time with mine as to make certain I'm going at a pace that that will please my progress.
Thanks again guys!

Hi Barry. Think if you have a look through some of the build diaries on the forum it will give you an idea of the wide variety of dry docks that are in use. You will also find your dry dock will be useful for other builds should you decide to take on others.
