Hi George, thought I would also post my reply to your question on your diary as I know you have a lot of followers from your neck of the woods and also just in case you do not visit my diary again soon and miss my response.... Hi Alan. BigGrin Looking stunning as expected. Cool Cool Hard to imagine a better build of SOTS. You really have excelled in the build. Cool Cool While I'm on your thread can I indulge re a couple of queries?BigGrin I notice your eyelets are black and as all this brass ware is only anodized metal and won't take a burnisher unless anodizing gone, is there a chemical that removes this anodizing rather than filing off as I've had to do re launch mesh. Would appreciate knowing as I really would like all brass ware that doesn't have to show as such to be black re the cannon fittings and all eyelets etc. I know ships those days had no brass ware or very little if they did as everything iron other than maybe bronze cannons and I'm not sure about those.Confused The other query is regarding the stern. As planks have been laid I've left a rough overhang as I filled in. Can this overhang be taken off level with the stern line or does some overhang have to stay. I think I saw somewhere 2mm overhang but not sure. Thought I would do this while waiting on planks next issue if I know what has to be done.Confused Regards George Thanks George, your kind comments are most welcome... Just home from work and read your post so thought I'd give a quick reply before getting down to some chores.. I tend to use two products available here, one is Krick and the other is blacken-it, both burnishing solutions and have found both to be equally as good. In order to get the best results I simply followed the thread posted by Magpie, the information he and others give here are well worth reading up on.. Here is the link to his thread.... http://forum.model-space...aspx?g=posts&t=5468 All the cannons provided are not brass but cast metal so painting is the answer here.. Instructions say to paint bronze but I went down the route of metal black... Regarding the stern, the 2mm overhang on all the planks down both sides of the stern piece are needed so don't go cutting them flush with the stern. The 2mm overhang on both sides will create a slot down the length of the stern, into this slot you will fit the stern post to which the rudder will be attached.. By leaving the 2mm overhang you will end up with a much neater finish line up the entire length of the stern post.. The fitting of the stern post I covered from around page 68 of my diary.... Hi Alan. Checked out Magpie's URL. I have the blackener, but will need to purchase the Isopropyl Alcohol do do the job as described. Will recheck once I have the gear to ensure I follow procedure. Thanks heaps for the URL it certainly gives me some hope now of blackening that anodized material. Have already cut stern overhangs to 2 mm length straight in line with the stern. Hi George In the past i have used mostly the 'Krick' blackener which has worked very well most of the time but sometimes it wont quite go off so well and appears blotchy and not an overall even black colour. As you probably already know from reading the instructions this is a chemical reaction type fluid and its the temperature that is most important to get the reaction to work. So what i have learned to do if the reaction is blotchy or patchy is this, put your metal work and its container into a microwave cooker and heat at medium to high power for 1 minute then leave to await the reaction, just repeat until you get the desired effect/colour. Issue 21 came on time. Have gone past current issue. Have now put 12 rows of planks bow to stern. (looks like 11 but pointed strake just on corner re a full plank to rear.) And 8 rows on hull bottom. Again ran out of planks to go further. Used all in issue.  Pics below where I am to date.      Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Hi Alan if you look in. Managed to purchase that Isopropyl Alcohol (.5 Ltr Squirt bottle) so will try to see if I'm successful blackening anodized pieces I have following instruction by "Magpie". Will put up pics if successful later. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Hi George Your planking is looking really good and way ahead of mine, which is good because I can pick your brain. I have 8 bottom planks in (4 each side) and having a bit of trouble keeping the plank stuck flat at the very end of the keel. I pin nail it and clamp it flat against the keel for at least 24 hours after gluing, but when I remove the clamp, the plank gradually lifts up one edge. I know it's caused by the 90deg twist in the plank, so did you have the same problem?  I've tried soaking and steam ironing the plank as well as cutting lots of grooves in it. Can you advise how you overcame this problem? The keel planking on your model looks terrific... Regards JohnP
