I caught the very tail end of a commercial for this product during the afternoon replay of the Hungarian GP yesterday in the US. It definitely caught my attention and I am interested but am somewhat leery of the aggregate price, so I had a few questions.

1) Is this model fully painted such that glue and general assembly are all that are required? I live in a modest condo and don't have the capacity to set up an airbrush station to deal with painting.

2) What skill is needed to complete this? I have probably built somewhere between 75 and 100 models of airplanes and cars, but I built all of those when I was a kid and I haven't built a model in over 20 years -- I only built one F-1 kit, which was a Tamiya Senna McLaren probably sometime around '91 or '92 (the paint was mediocre which made me ask question 1 due to the difficulty of the mask job on a rounded F-1 body).

3) Does the quality warrant the cost? I understand no one has a full kit yet due to the trickling out of parts on a monthly basis, but I guess what I'm wondering is whether this is a very high quality kit where the parts are tooled and manufactured by skilled craftsmen in Japan earning a first world salary or if this stuff is all made in China by the lowest bidder.

Thanks.

Ditto to what Steve has said and as I am doing the official build diary, I have all parts to hand and the quality and level of detail is fantastic. You will love build Senna's MP4/4 BigGrin

Many thanks for the responses, gents. I am still waffling and have been thinking about starting the subscription all week, but that US $1500 (with shipping) price tag is soooo steep.

I have two more questions.

1) On the tooling and manufacturing, it looks and sounds like it is exceptionally high quality, but do you guys know if it is all made in Japan? My wife is Japanese and it's a lot easier for me to clear the Appropriations Committee (my wife) if I can say someone in Kanagawa Prefecture is benefiting from the purchase as opposed to it being made by some guy making 90 cents an hour in China.

2) I am terrified about getting 10 months in and messing up a step - is it possible to buy individual packs or decals on a one off basis if I need to replace a part? I would hate to be $750 in and then screw something up since I likely lack the skill needed to remediate mistakes.

It says on the back of the packs that they are made in China. But to be honest most stuff is nowadays. I think that you can reorder packs you'll have to double check on that. Obviously it would be at extra cost.

I think you just need to look at the pictures on other threads here to see the quality of the model. I am about half-way through building the MP4-23 from De Agostini and that is absolutely first class quality- I will be moving on to the MP4/4 when it's finished.

I too hadn't built a model for many years, but have had little difficulty so far, and the build diaries and tips on this forum are an enormous help.

As to buying individual packs, you can certainly order them here in the UK as a one-off purchase from the back issues section of the website- not sure about the USA, it would be worth checking.

Hi Random poster
Unfortunatlly the MP 4 series is not classed as a magazine series if it had a magazine with each issue then back orders of individual magazines would be possible like the MP 23. There is good news though if any parts are faulty or damaged then a call to CS to arrange a replacement pack to be sent out should cover any problems

Regards

Andy

But it does come with a monthly magazine, just like the MP4/23:-

So surely one can order back issues in the normal way? Confused

BigGrin Hi Mattsr
The MP 23 series was available from its outset as a newsagent and subscription from the website or by leaflet provided in issue 1, therefore as its a weekly part works available in news agents its classed as a magazine issue and individual issue's can be back ordered.
The MP 4 is only available as a subscription from our website and not available in shops as was the MP 23 this classes it as a subscription only and not a magazine issue , although you are correct in saying there is a magazine with each package you will receive 1 magazine per month with each package sent out, so 18 magazines for the senna build and 85 for the MP 23.
As i have previously said replacement packs for each month are available if there are faults found but not to order individual issues ,so for instance lets say this month it is pack 4 for most people and some fault is found with one of the issue's then a call to CS usaly results in that months issue's being resent.

If you damage the part yourself during assembly, you will be charged for any replacement parts sent but as Andy has already explained, contact CS in all instances. Failing that you can PM Admin, give them your subscription details in the PM and the parts/packs you need replacing and they will do the rest.
