The PE certainly removes the plastic look usually common in these kits - very nice work !!

Thanks again for all the comments guysBigGrin

I'm calling the island structure complete now so it was time to start work on the catwalks and safety nets.

The kit parts were to be replaced with the etch parts and they really are very niceBigGrin
Only thing was though that the catwalk bulwarks and other bits had to be cut from the kit parts first, so its basically only the catwalk floors and nets that are being replaced.

The first pics show the completed island with decals, light grime wash and a satin overspray to get a more "metal" look to the paint.

The next lot of pics is to try to show the process of making one of the catwalks and what parts are required from the original kit parts. There are also 86 etch support brackets that are placed under the catwalks and I have just completed this horrible task today.
Now that the ship no longer needs to be turned over I can now start to add some detail to the flight deck, the first part being the crane pictured below.

BTW, the last but one pic of the stern shows a little problem I could have solved if Id thought a bit more - the locating slots in the hull for the catwalks are a lot bigger than the etch lugs that fit into them, I think I could have perhaps cut off the plastic kit lugs and fitted these to the etch parts as well and then these would have filled the slots in the hull. As it is now I will need to fill or cover these slots

More soonBigGrin

Steve

Steve

It's coming along a real treat. Those photo etch parts must need some keen eyesight to work with but the result is outstanding.

Happy modelling

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I'm the feeling that this one is on the home straight now, the end is in sight and I may even begin to make a start on the resin sea base todayBigGrin

All catwalks and nets are done, and I have also just installed all the life raft cannisters around the catwalks.

Started the weathering as well, now Im going by one pic of the Ilustrious for this - she can be seen all all different states from spotlessly clean to the ones with damage to her hull but I have gone for an in-between look.
I wanted very subtle grime streaking and some heavy rust streaks from the anchor as the pic below. The grey streaks seem even stronger on the camera than they really are but believe me it's very hard to know when to stop with weathering, and that's the hardest partBigGrin

I may have some pics with the island fitted in place tonight. More soon.

Steve

Very nice indeed.

Look forward to seeing your basing ideas as it's sure to set the model off a treat.

Looking around the net the other day I saw one of these completed with a whole contingent of crew walking around - guess some some of etch set but that would take some good eyesight.

Your weathering is spot on as not an easy thing to do over such a big area and keep consistent.

Happy modelling

Tony

Thanks for all the commentsBigGrin As promised the island is now attached so I thought Id indulge in some low light shots even though it's not completed yetLaugh

Still to do are the work boats and Davits, crane, flag poles and some bits and bobs for the flight deck - forklifts, crane vehicle, towing cars and towbars, jacks and ladders.

I will probably be setting this into the sea base before adding all the above and the airwing of course which will consist of 2 seakings, 2 merlin, 6 harrier gr3 and 6 sea harrier.

Those lighting effects look brilliant. Especially good as you have stopped any light leaks or light fairs that sometimes marr these sort of effects.

It really is a fantastic build.
