I wont get issue 21 till Thursday so I'm just about out of planks and now fiddling with the ships' boat. There are no gunsmiths in Mandurah, the nearest apart from Perth, is Bunbury or Busselton. The 2 I spoke to were not sure what burnishing fluid was, mentioning 'blueing fluid' instead. Not being a chemist I don't have a clue. John Hope the building is going well. While I cannot be sure if it would ship from the USA to Australia being a liquid the following may give you an idea of what this blackening agent actually is. Hi All Progress for August 2014 - with some pictures; * Repainted the ships boat, blackened mesh and fitted, assembled duck boards outside the boat, painted, then installed; * Finished laying trial deck planking to middle deck, leaving plenty of space for dummy cannon supports. Will clear lacquer prior to fitting third deck; * Continued hull planking up to issue 25. Got the plank ends up the stern post in a fairly straight line. Made a bit of a blue with the bow planking - the first 4 planks from the false keel are finished too long, taking up too much space towards the bows - consequently I ran out of room at the first bow former. I've compromised by ending bottom planks along the last upper hull plank... Overall I'm happy with my planking, but any comments or advice will be appreciated... Hi John, coming along very nicely and don't worry too much about running out of room at the bow for the planks, you're doing just fine.... remember, this layer is about getting a nice smooth shape to the hull, clean lines all ready for the final layer of planks which of course is the most important..... .. Deck planking looking great, very nice work there... Keep posting those pics.... Regards Alan

Hi John. Everything looking good mate. Looks like you've got deck planking under control too. Like Alan said you'll see where you need to put in pointed strakes to alleviate the curvature from bow to stern as that gap closes. The only assistance I can offer is watch when the gap closes at rib 26 or thereabouts to the stern to ensure planks close off that gap. I nearly made a mistake when following the narrowing of three planks at the stern as shown in Official Build as I had the start of the taper bow side of rib 26 and would have left a skinny gap at that point where I should have started the taper stern side of rib 26 and the three planks of full width would have closed it off perfectly. Better that you might have to narrow a plank there to fit than the planks not filling or you'll be having to have pointed strakes opposite one another. Of course as Alan says the most important thing is filling in with this first layer of planks. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Hi Everyone - I'm baaa-aaack! Sorry I've been AWOL for a while but my 14 year old wind-up lap top gave up the ghost a couple of months ago and I was loathe to go out and buy one of these new- fangled things with different op systems...  Something about teaching old dogs new tricks...not possible in my case either... . Anyhow, the wife eventually went out and bought me a new one, so then I was FORCED to bite the bullet and learn my way around this new device. This has taken a bit more time, and then I had trouble with passwords in logging on to this forum...  Notwithstanding the foregoing trials and tribulations, I have been pottering along with my SotS build and have attached some pics of my progress to date. Hi All Below are some pics showing November Progress with completion of hull planking... The last picture shows detail of planks ending at the Starboard side gallery foundation plate. When I reached the top there was room only for one short 50mm piece whereas instruction says there should be two pieces. But if I put the second piece in, it would extend well beyond the top of the stern gallery... There are 16 layers of planks from the bottom corner of the gallery to the top - the same as in the magazine and Mr T's official build diary, so I'm not sure how this situation occurred...  So can anyone advise if there would be a detrimental effect to the future build by omitting the second short piece - bearing in mind there would be only half the perpendicular elevation at the forward end of the short piece... Hi John, lovely work and its great to see you back publishing your progress... .. Regarding your question, it really does not matter if the planks go above the stern gallery section as later in the build you will do some marking and some trimming back of the planks to give you the overall height... Variations in this part of the build is very common so just carry on as you are doing and add the extra plank.... Hope this helps however, any queries then let me know. Regards Alan

Thanks also for the - as always - sound advice re the second short plank and which has been followed today...It doesn't look too bad... You will note I have clear lacquered the middle deck planking in accordance with your earlier advice and it looks really good. A bit orangey in the photo but that is just the artificial light I have in here. The colour is actually very similar to the hull planking - which is how I wanted it... Kind regards JohnP

Hi Everyone Collected issue 38 from the newsagent today - at last - a change of scenery!!!  - but alas - I can't get to it yet as I still have the procedures of issues 35 and 36 to carry out...  So not a lot of further progress for November, I was obliged to modify my build cradle as it was unstable whenever weight/pressure was applied to the bows or stern and tended to tip downwards... Fixed that with two extension bars added... At the same time installed additional screws to allow for height leveling adjustment on all quarters, and extend width of cradle to accommodate thickness of second layer of planking and protective cushioning... I've sanded and filled one side of the hull and quite happy with the result - smooth as a baby's bum now... Kind regards to All JohnP John Passmore attached the following image(s):
