I am thinking about planking each deck in turn using the same scale wood that was supplied with the launch for planking - will this cause me any problems in later issues? Each deck seems to be an individual unit which should have no bearing on the deck above. I am using the cut outs idea and will be building column supports etc. I am think about using Mahogany Strip 0.5x4mm or 0.5x3mm from Cornwall Model Boats not sure which size would suit best though You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Hi Riff-raff. Good idea to plank decks, although I personally think that mahogany is too dark. You need to choose a lighter colour like lime or sapella. Hope this helps. Dave H
Current builds :- Hachette 1/16 Tiger Tank H.M.S Victory, Santisima Trinidad (Section), 1/8 scale Aston Martin DB5, 1/8 scale McLaren, YNWA

Good point Dave, I am going to use a black marker to represent the nails so this would be lost in the mahogany - Any thoughts on the width of each plank? I am planing on using black paper for the deck plank caulking - a bit fiddley and time consuming but the results that I have seen look really good You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Hi
I am going to plank from the second deck (the one we are supposed to draw the planks onto).
I have ordered 0.5 mm x 3 mm tangya. Wood from online hobbies. Bit of a wait as they are closed until the end august.
Will need to take care with wood of this thickness as the water in wood glue can "curl" the wood. Again not much scope for any over heavy sanding either but I am hoping that the thickness of these planks will not look out of place.
Hope you enjoy your build.

Am I missing something here?
Not having a full set of plans for this build makes it difficult but looking at the drawings in McKay, for instance, assuming that one is not doing the cutout, neither the lower or middle gun decks will be visible. So what is the point of planking these decks at all? Except for some detail adjacent to the Entry Ports which are relatively small and only provide a limited internal viewing angle.
The upper gun deck can be seen through the waist in the quarter deck and hopefully when we get to that stage we will receive deck planking and guns to run the length of the upper gun deck. [It would be helpful if Admin can confirm exactly how many complete guns and how many barrels we will receive in total for the entire build.]
Perhaps those with experience of building a previous three decker can clarify my confusion?

Hi I am with Mike T on this one it is going to be an expenesive build so why add to it by planking some thing that can not be seen. Malcolm Only got room for one build, but might try and sneek in a small one later Have snuck in the Endevour

The reason that I am planking all visible areas is because I am going to make the most of the cut outs. I realise that the view of the planking will be limited which is also why I will only be planking the areas that can be seen through the cutouts. I am planning on creating the columns in the visible areas as well but I will be using other objects to block the view further into the non decorated areas. I will also be using LED lighting to represent the candle lighting. Each deck will only use about 20 1 meter lengths of Tanganyka Strip 0.5x3mm the cost of this from Cormwall Model Boats is £4.80 + £2.50 surcharge on packaging. Not really a massive expense. As mike and Malcolm say this is an expensive build but in answer to that I say, then why not make the most of it? Most of the builders that I have been watching are going above on beyond the methods shown in the instructions. If I am going to spend the amount of money that this build will finally cost then I am going to make the most of the build and add further detail where ever possible. I cannot afford to buy this boat in a 1 off kit but I can afford the extra £12.00 or so quid to plank the decks etc. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.
