Hello all,

my my my what an enormous turn out and readership, very impressive Deagostini.

i couldnt believe my eyes and ears when i saw the advertisement on tv during the return of the Australian F1. I had to have it.
i am a huge red bull fan first of all then Webber for obvious poroquial reasons. Also fan of Vettel of course he is a master but hey they do get up to questionable things at times, lets not get into the Multi 21 saga.

nonetheless the reason why i did not subscribe was my delivery could not be guaranteed safe in my mailbox due to high thefts. also some couriers arent exactly conscientious when leaving items in discreet out of sight places. so instead i have an arrangement with my newsagent for every week i pick up 2 copies. yes 2 of each and every copy. i plan to build one and keep the other unassembled as a collectors item or for my nephew when he gets older. Another budding RB Webber fan.

People might carry on as some have about the cost and time line but its a free choice. for me you simply cannot buy this car anywhere at all and given the time this thing takes to build, very few would be willing to part with it. also being a licensed RBRF1 and Kyosho product it is pretty exclusive. being an rc freak from way back i know the kyosho product is at the pointy end of quality and reputation globally.

as an added bonus my cousin in Bremen(think Heineken)Germany is sending me a Vettel version which is pretty much identical but with Sebs number on the body and not sure what else different. He is an RB nut too and will be sending me parts every 3 months or so. Looking at his forum they are well ahead of us. Not sure if my wall is big enough for 2 of these monster F1 cars but will be fun building 2 of them. Its also a present so would be rude to refuse.

Anyway guys thanks for reading this far and good work on the magazine. Wednesdays are the highlight of my week now.

Enjoy.

Welcome Simon and a nice refreshing first post with so much positiveness (is that a word?) Like you say, it is about free choice and if it keeps us all happy then what is it to do with anyone else??

thanks for the welcome replies fellow members.

well today i scored another victim of the RB7 build bug.that is 3 so far now.

2 work colleagues and the brother in law now are signed or have arranged with the newsagent for regular issues. i get a phone call today at lunch asking what issue i was up to, told my bro in law it was issue 4 and managed to source all 4 issues in one newsagent who was fearing returning them and has purchased the next 10 issues in advance from the newsagent as they come in. he too like me lives in apartment blocks so no home deliveries.

i know every Wednesday the phone will be running hot.

is it Wednesday yet...?

Well its been a bit of a win win.

win-my work has allowed for me to have personal deliveries to the office, so logically i have now subscribed. i can now be assured of delivery.

win-i also received a 15kg package from my cousin in Bremen.

all i can say to you potential builders is, dont underestimate the size of the model. the dimensions are spot on and now i have to start re arranging my wall for 2 of these!!!

one will be a shelf queen and the other will be converted to a brushless setup. doubt i will have the guts to play with it though. all that time and building it. but curiosity might get the better of me.

is it wrong to wish the weeks to pass so quickly???

it has been a while but am pleased to say managed to finish car 1 of 3.

when the engine parts and engine cover for the body started coming together it was hard to stop building.

pictures worth a thousand words....as below...

Also, one word of advice i can offer is that when assembling the body panels there can be alot of distortion. i dummy fitted the panels together and then used sticky tape to hold the panels in place. once in perfect position i then glued the panels. however as they panels were molded separately and not in one whole piece you will still get some sort of distortion. some buidlers may not be fussed and find this negligible.

to each their own.

I will try on the next car using a wax to give the panels a nice gloss shine. i hear some builders using an acrylic spray over the panels and the decals start to craze and distort. i am not willing to try this method so i will go the the wax route and post back here...

Hi Simon,

Nice looking build, THREE of them well done.

I've agonised over the issue of painting the display body and have actually started my build at the chassis stage intending to come back to the body (got a build diary going). I'm keen to see how you go with the waxing maybe the answer a lot a people are looking for.

The answer is to use an aqueous clearcoat. Waxing will likely prevent the waterslide decals adhereing to the body.

I may even go the vinyl sticker route with modelling wax. just dont trust myself with the air brushing.

An associate owns a sign writing business and he also does vinyl livery for race cars. might be a bit fiddly but worth a shot.

Have just finished car number 2 and am still annoyed with the way the panels arent quite seating flush. i went over some of the pieces with a fine file and even measured them with vernier calipers but its just doing my head in getting the flow and height of the panel joins perfect.i have mainly noticed the engine cover area where it joins the rear of the side pods. but i have resigned that its just not possible unless they were molded together.

i will get over but i am loving building and looking at them.

next will buy a tiger shaft drive adaptor so i can fire one the babies up.
i am over pull starts.

So now car number 2 has been completed i have noticed the detail in the front and rear brake ducts which i find pretty cool.

i just don't have the skill (time/patience)to put the adhesive carbon fibre on them as i think it would look great. i must add that the front and rear ducts are a tad fiddly to put on but well worth the trouble as the detail is a good touch.

i also learnt on the 2nd car when applying decals how to splice the decals that have the bulls backs join together over the engine cover. didnt think it would matter initially but now that its done the first car looks a bit shabby in that area compared to the 2nd car. i will try to re-wet the 1st car decals to try the same but will likely have to buy another sheet of decals.

Hey Tony,

thanks mate, i have fired up the nitro already, tweaked the throttle linkages and managed a few brief donuts in the garage without the cover. i dont think the car will be running long enough to complete full run in tbh. best long term for me is to have this brushless if i will actually have this as a hack toy, as i am over the nitro fuel clean up and smell from years gone by.

i have some video but will upload when i have footage with the proper lexan body on it. am still yet to paint and sticker it.i have a feeling i will melt the display body if i ran it, not to mention the clearance with the engine head. i am considering a marine head and setting some twin radiators for cooling with water. maybe get the head replaced to accommodate or mod the existing one. i dunno, i can get carried away at times and the safest place these cars can be is bolted to my wall...and admired.
