Have just started issue 104, build is now exactly 2 years in the making with another 31 issues still to go, still back to issue 104... In this issue we fit the 10 cannons on the main deck or in my case build the 10 cannons first.... Did a cannon very early in the build as instructed but when I placed it on the deck, to me it just looked all wrong, far too bright and garish for my colour scheme and too much shiny brass on display...  .Luckily I have some spare cannons so set about changing things around a little, first with the colour... Painted with red ocre but still too bright for me so gave the carriage a covering with a black wash, dabbing the excess off with a tissue... Painted the cannon in matt metal black, gold on some of the ornamentation on top finishing with a coat of matt varnish... On the blocks they have been changed to 2mm walnut and instead of the wire I used 0.15 thread, the block at the rear has also been changed from a single block to a double block.... Also changed the rings for smaller ones.. Will also be rigging the cannons differently from the instructions.... Am a lot happier with the first cannon, blends in a lot better with the overall colour scheme so now to get down to making up the other 9.. will post further pics when I get to that point before fitting to the decks...... Love the cannon Alan, there is certainly a lot to be said for leaving all the cannons and painting / rigging them as a job lot if possible for consistency. Did did the same as you with the 1st cannon and by the time you do the rest your standards are so much higher because you have learned so much. Steve

Hi Alan, Lot's of work going on with the Cannons all for the better,I must say that Matt Varnish look's the part, also the 2 mm block's look more to size against the carriages but very fiddly to fit overall,thank you for posting. Hi Alan Nice work on the cannons and certainly a great look, you mention using a black wash another you could try is a Burnt Umber Wash 'Vallejo' do a water based one that is ready mixed and there are others available. Have seen many a reference to Vallejo products on the forum so will definitly have a look to add to my stash.... Appreciate the tip.... Regards Alan

Issue 105 was picked up from the newsagents and just contains 4 pieces of bling and cannon kits..... To give me a break from rigging blocks thought I would get the bling painted ready for fitting. Painted small areas with red again just to give a little more definition..... Thought I would also show very simple rig I set up which is helping tremendously with getting the cannons fitted with rigging... everything will be adjusted when fitting to the decks..... Block of ply simply with 5 holes drilled to take the pins, nothing elaborate but as said, works very well and no glue needed..... Not sure if they are rigged correctly for the period but I'm happy with it so far, really wasn't to happy with the way the build instructions showed how to rig the cannons so decided to change it completely..... Back to blocks and cannon fitting, will post when they are done.... Happy building all... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
