having never worked with mdf what is the sealer mr t is surgesting do benny b.

 Hi Benny MDF is made from sawdust and a resin that is moulded under preasure to get sheet or shaped items like a picture rail. The problem is the resin that can have carcogenic property's so the use of a mask when sanding MDF is a must, the reason a primer has been recomended is to seal any internal parts for painting such as within the cut aways Regards Andy  Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

I personally don't like to work with MDF if sanding is involved - I usually re-make the MDF parts from ply. Much stronger and safer You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Hi Riff-raff, I haven't used MDF yet so I'm going to give it a try and see how it works out. Already purchased some MDF sealer but am going to have to get myself a decent mask as well for the sanding - I thought I'd do as much of that as I can outdoors if I can anyway.
If I find that the MDF is too problematic, can you give me some advice on how to make the parts from 'real' wood?

For subscribers - issue 1 arrived this AM. Weight of the material is noticable, I hadn't realised they're going for a scale tonnage too! (a little jokette there.)

You're right there Blev,
Must be the mass of the MDF
Still waiting for my 1st month's issues to arrive , but that should be any day now as yours have arrived safely.
Don't forget to buy yourself some MDF sealer and a face mask for the sanding.
Hachette don't mention the use of sealer in their guide, but they do recommend a face mask - although that's in very small print and could easily be missed by the builder.
I feel they should have made the use of a face mask more important due to the carcinogenic nature of the binding constituents of MDF.
Anyway, are you going to do a build diary? It would be interesting to see another U-96 build on the forum.

I'm still waiting/deciding to pull the trigger on this one, I've got issue 1 and 2 at my newsagents so far but am only at issue 28 of HMS Victory!
Love the movie Das Boot though and the history behind the U96, will keep getting them at the newsagents until they stop getting them and then make a decision.
Would love to see some build diaries, though I appreciate it's very early days!

Wish everyone the best of luck with their builds and looking forward to seeing some work in progress. Purchased the first edition to get a feel for what it was all about and would agree your looking at a fair weight with this one based on the initial part 1 mdf parts. Happy Modelling

Yes, I know, there's a load of old nonsense in there but to condense it down - I will if I can but I won't if I can't. B

Hi Blev,
I understand that some of the materials used in some part works don't always measure up and if one isn't happy with it, then cancellation is an option. Haven't tried any locomotive builds, so that's outside of my experience so can't comment on them other than to say they do look impressive on the web-sites and TV commercials.
As for myself, I've been building (and still at it), DeAgostini's HMS Victory part work and I've had a few problems, but the friends on this forum have always been on hand to give me support and help me out when my skills were not sufficient to sort the problem.
Sorry to hear about your health, and hope you are on the mend. I have health issues myself and these part works are a therapy for me. The weekly stages make it an enjoyable hobby to keep my mind active.
So I hope we'll hear from you as your build progress's even if you don't do a build diary (I didn't do one for my Victory). Remember, we're all here to help each other where we can.

BUILD UPDATE #1
Hi shipmates,
The much awaited first consignment of my subscription arrived today. This consisted of parts 2 and 3, the free gifts; 1: a binder and dividing cards, and 2; a fold-up magnifier.
Much as I am tempted, I will not be making a start on the build just yet as I am going to order MDF replacement cutaway parts from marinemodellwerft.de to replace the Hachette hull section where the forward torpedo room will be. The somewhat hefty price tag of 195.86 euros for the full conversion will be reduced because the 'mod' is supplied in 9 separate sub-assemblies (forgive the pun), so I'm only going to buy them as I need them.
That's just about it for this one, and many thanks for looking in and for all the positive comments.

David Your on your way now then with your first pack .mi must admit the torpedo room enhancement is a Must for this one even though it's annoying they left this section infilled in the kit I was looking again at the launch pictures and having 2 sections open but one of the most important - the torpedo room - filled in does not look right to me. Good morning friends and shipmates,
Well, I have just ordered my conversion kit for the torpedo section - well, not all of it - just the MDF frames to replace those supplied by Hachette in their part work.
The postage on this item came in at a whopping 19.64 EUR (that's around £15.34 to you and me). I'm not grumbling because I really wanted to make this enhancement to the build, so I have to expect pay the price.
The only other issue is that there is a 4 week delivery on their parts, so i should have had another subscription delivery by then, so I'm going to have plenty to get my teeth into when I do make a start.
Thanks Tony (birdaj2) for the comments, I've looked the pictures on the website again and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of visual representation of the cutaways to give us an idea of what they'll look like, which is a shame really, and in my humble opinion, I can't quite figure out why Hachette didn't do more to include the torpedo room in their model.
Anyway. that's it for now, and thanks for looking in.

Hi david
I too have subscribed to this partwork and up to now have only received issue 1. I am also going to add the enhancement and ordered the half the parts 4 weeks ago (although no indication of them being dispatched yet) and ordered the rest yesterday. I suspect with the U-96 release in this country the German firm have probably had a sudden rush of orders.
I haven't decided if I will do a diary as yet but look forward to watching your build progress.

Does that mean that there is going to be another 4 weeks wait on top of that notice, or do you think we'll get them a few days after notice of dispatch?
Good to know I'm not alone with this conversion. Ive settled for ordering the parts as I need them because I couldn't afford the cost of ordering them all at once, although I fear I may come unstuck with the high cost of carriage by doing it this way - at least ordering them in one go would save considerably on the postage. But, at least I'll enjoy this build so that will make me a happy bunny!.
