I am new to model building so I am probably being a little ambitious to start with Sovereign of the Seas. Still, all is going well so far with me up to issue 3.
One question I have is should I use spray paints or brushes - which requires the most skill to use effectively? - and what gives the best and most authentic finish? I know that spray paints cost more initially with the hardware need but I am not too worried about that - just want to do the best job I can.

Hi Simon, don't think you are being ambitious at all with taking on the SOTS as your first build, its what I did and am now on issue 108... Can understand you thinking that as that was how I felt when I started... Just take your time, study the instructions carefully and follow other diaries especially the Official Build Diary by Mr T and you should be fine..... On you question of paints, most of the paints I used were the Admiralty paints supplied through cornwall model boats...Stains and varnishes we purchased through my local hardware store.. Most of the application has been by brush but have used an airbrush too.... Using spray paints will also give you a nice finish but the biggest piece of advice I would give is try doing some test samples first on some scrap pieces, this way you can perfect your technique on how to apply the paint plus you will see how the finish would look.... Always best to do tests before actually applying any paints or varnishes to your build...... Hope this helps and remember assistance is always here should you need it.... Good luck with your build... Regards Alan
