Hi All, Installed the main mast lantern this weekend. All the electrical, bar final connections, is done. Still holding my breath though - hope it stays on. Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!"

Hi all. To varnish, or not to varnish… I was not sure whether I should leave the stained parts as-is, or whether I should apply a coat of varnish. As I used alcohol based stain, leaving the timber unsealed just did not feel right. One of the reasons that I avoided applying varnish is that once the timber has been varnished, I could no longer use white glue and, I also like the natural appearance of the timber. To compound matters, I have completed the masts and spars – including their cotton bindings. After lengthy consideration, I decided to apply varnish to my model. I did some tests on scrap pieces and found that there was no adverse effect of applying the varnish over the cotton elements. It actually seemed to enhance their appearance. (I used a matt oil based varnish) I have applied varnish to the masts, lower hull and bowsprit. The varnished hull appears glossy as the varnish is still wet, it has dried matt. FYI no harm came to my inverted Victory and drawings of my over-complicated upside-down ship holding jig are available at an exorbitant cost!!!
