I hope that someone out there that is an expert in locomotives can explain to me what the front mounted release lever is for on the D-51 model I am presently building. I have no problems or issues with what I am doing but for the life of me cannot understand what this would be used for on the full size loco. Hope someone can put my inquisitive mind at rest on this one. Happy Modelling

There is also a release lever fixed to the the rear of the tender.
It appears to be a mechanism used to release the engine or tender from any carriages attached.

Not quite sure how it works other than its lifted, though I would think that in real life it is attached to something else for it to make the release, which when looking at this pic of a real tender, it seems to have a loop onto the coupling pin, which in turn would pull up the pin when the release bar is pulled up, and release the couple.Tomick attached the following image(s):

Hi birdaj2, The horizontal lever is to pull the pin up so that the coupling can be opened. Watch this video; http://www.youtube.com/w...list=PL08E88A50043F2B83

Mark Many thanks for taking the time to update on this query. It was one of those times you look at something and for looking cannot make head nor tail of it. That is a spot on video showing exactly how it is used. On another point the weather in that video looks like one of the coldest, bleakest November days we sometimes see - buuurr. Thanks again, a very interesting video. Happy Modelling
