One hundred years ago, a World War One hospital ship ran aground just a mile off Whitby. The dramatic three-day rescue mission that ensued resulted in scores of lives being saved but spelled the end of the era of the rowing lifeboat, and was one of the most dramatic RNLI rescues ever encountered.

Hi Mr T,Blink

That is one harrowing story, but, we must all remember how much we depend on the RNLI and all the other emergency services we sometimes take for granted.

This 2 min Pathe news real of the event actually shows some survivors coming ashore while locals make a human chain to help them ashore.
