Hi folks I'm at SOTS just now and unhappily have not gotten down to uploading any pics just now as I haven't the cash just now to get myself a decent Digital camera to let you all see my progress..I am stumped as to the colour the planking should be and what particular brand to use. and whats the best to bring out the grain of the planks  I have read a few pointers as to many of what most of you would use! but as a novice to these big ships, some of the many recommendations are too numerous to mention. I was just going to use Ronseal colour varnish.. is this a wise decision and can I just use the one coat as most of the planking is really thin. Help!!!  Happy modelling David. Promise too much ...and many will be in search of you!

Hi David, to enable me to answer your question fully can you tell me if you are referring to deck planking or hull planking? Regards Alan

My advice on deck planking would always be to create some test sections from scrap planks first, prepare them as you would the deck planks itself, ie, giving the sections a light fine sanding... Then try your choice of various stains and varnishes finally selecting the one you like the best... For my own build, I applied Coldron's light oak wood stain, applying additional coats to darken until I got the effect I was after, finally sealing the deck with a clear matt varnish...  . Hi Alan... Thank you for the advice, Much appreciated!..I haven't used stain for a while and the last time i used it was with walnut on the window frames using a rag, looked great once finished... I'm still waiting for sots issues 6.7.8.9..but building Sant Trin in between issues of SOTS.. I'm really enjoying the builds on both ships..there has been some slight MM warp on the ST's ribs .. but not that bad Thank God!! great stuff these ships... dunno why i haven't started them sooner....happy modelling Alan!! Promise too much ...and many will be in search of you!
