Hi all, I have been researching about canons. In the build it has been suggested to paint them black. Gun carriages of the 17th Century were made of wood. This included the wheels. Were the wheels pained black after they were made. Would not the wheels be brown. As I'm about to commence painting I was wondering if any one could clear this up for me. Regards

hi ted, these are one of those things that the bo'sun and capt. made this decision to the gun crew,the cannons had to be spick and span at all times,and were inspected daily, so yes they would have been painted and well looked after. but you are the builder and capt of this ship, so what you say goes. aye aye capt. Thanks Karl I'll bear that in mind. Being ex Army I know about spit and polish. Black wheels now sound good. Regards

If you were to leave your wheels natural wood they wood be a pail bleached wood colour not brown at all.
Look at some pics of Victories cannons for reference, but bear in mind that victory colours are not correct for the carriages.

Just a thought about black cannon wheels. Could they have been pitched to help against rotting and sliding on the deck in rough seas. I can remember as a kid seeing pitched or tarred timber on boats for both reasons.
