Thanks Ian, good to have another voice on this diary, have you taken a look at Riff raff, Silent running and Pemberg's diaries as well? We're all at about the same stage of this build.
Happy building

You're welcome Alan, it was a big help and has reinforced what I already understand about uploading images. That irritating problem was the main reason that I didn't upload any pics of the work this week, but now it's resolved itself, it's back to work.
Thanks again and happy building

BUILD UPDATE #8

Welcome back shipmates.

This week sees the continuation of the U-96 build with issue #9, which makes a start on the left (port) side of the hull framework.
We are deviating from the official build assembly in that parts 1-L, 128 and 44 will not be used, but substituted with the MDF framework which is part of the forward torpedo room conversion.
First of all, the slots in the 'new' frame needed a little work to square them up with a small needle file so as to accept the transverse frames that come with the 'mod'. as explained earlier, this was because the replacement parts are milled and not laser cut.
Also, the horizontal slot at the front end needed opening up ready to accept future parts.
All went well, but a small adjustment was needed to the frame because after looking at the images I took of the build stage, I noticed it was slightly out of line, so it was necessary to pry apart the frame and re-fix it in the correct alignment.
Then it was only a matter of checking the transverse frames for correct fit and then gluing them into position.
That's all for this week, thanks for looking in and, as usual comments welcome.
Happy building
David

BUILD UPDATE #9

Hi again friends.
This week is issue #10 of the u-boat build. But not so much a build update, more of a review.
The parts supplied with issue #10 (2-L,45 and 46) are not needed here as 2-L was incorporated into the large MDF frame for the forward torpedo room conversion and the lateral frames 45 and 46 are replaced by lateral frames supplied with the conversion kit.
That's it for this week, thanks for looking in and the kind comments from last week. just to finish here's a couple of images of the parts mentioned.
Happy building

BUILD UPDATE #10

Hi shipmates
This week issue (#11), deals with the fitting of the longitudinal frame 3-L, the left-hand cutaway section for the control room.
Transverse frames 47 and 48 are omitted from this build because the parts from the forward torpedo room conversion are used in their place.
After checking the fit of part 3-L, it was glued and fixed into place and clamped until set. I found that there was a slight imperfection in the accurate alignment of this part and some filing/sanding will be required at a later stage.
A line was drawn between the forward edge of the top slot and the rear edge of the bottom slot on what would have been part 2-L, and part 128 (a reinforcement part)was glued into position, aligning the front edge with the line and using a piece of dowel to centre the hole.
That completed this weeks work. Thanks for looking in and more next week, or whenever my next delivery arrives.
Happy building
David

BUILD UPDATE #10.1

Hello friends and shipmates.
Just a mention that Parts 12,13,14 and 15 of U-96 arrived today, so I'll have a little something to work on over the holiday (and figure out what use - if any, the free tool box is going to be!).
There will NOT be a build update #11 as I'm going to renumber them to reflect the issue number that will be worked on that week, so folks, the next build update will be #12.
May I take this opportunity to wish all folks looking in, and their families, a very Merry Christmas and Good modelling in the New Year.
Happy building
David

BUILD UPDATE #12

Hi everyone, I hope your Christmas festivities went well and Santa was good to you all.
This week's update is the fitting of frames 4-L and 40-L (the transverse frames 49 and 50 being omitted due to the conversion of this build).
After checking frame 4-L for fit, it was glued into place and clamped. Next was to draw 2 vertical pencil lines to allow for correct positioning of part 42 (a reinforcement part). This was then glued in place using a piece of 5mm dowel to centre the hole using the guide lines for correct alignment and clamped in position.
Working along the hull stern-ward, part 40-L was positioned to check alignment and then glue applied and the part clamped in place to dry. Again, the 5mm dowel was used to centre the hole.
I don't quite know why Hatchette decided to skip the engine room cutaway section (129), very odd, but there must be a reason. Still, that's for next week.
So that's all for now, thanks for looking in. Comments welcome and see you next week.
Happy building
David

BUILD UPDATE #13

Hi again,
This weeks parts are 2 laser-cut sheets containing a main frame (129), 2 reinforcing parts (2 x 128), and 2 transverse frames (51 & 52).
Part 129 fits in between 4-L and 40-L which were fitted last week. After I'd checked that it was a good fit, it was glued into place and clamped until dry. The reinforcement parts were then added over each end of 129, clamped and left to dry with a piece of dowel inserted in the holes to centre them.
Transverse frame 51 was then test fitted and glued into place (this became the rear bulkhead for the forward torpedo room conversion ). Frame 52 was fitted and glued in against frame 51, clamped and left to dry.
That's it for this week, thanks for looking in.
Happy building
David

Some good progress on your build. It's a mammoth of a model and should look excellant when finished.

I guess you will heed a fair amount of paint for such a large surface area as this.

Hope the rest of your build goes well.

Happy Modelling

Hi David, your build is coming on nicely. Had to put mine on hold whilst son was home from uni as I was using his room as extra build space. he goes back this weekend so I will be able to get back to it.

Hi David,

i`m following your build with great interest.

I wanted to give my build a start this weekend, as the parts from marinewerft arrived at last.
But sadly the two big main-frames for the torpedo section were broken!

So more waiting ahead!

How did you manage these parts not to take damage during the build, as they are made from very easy breaking material?

Cheers,
DaDokta

Walter
