Hi All,BigGrin

Here`s one anniversary that may be over looked with all the anniversaries going on at the moment.

On the 17th of December 1939, a German cruiser, sometimes known as a "pocket battleship" was scuttled rather than let it fall into allied hands.

The vessel was scuttled outside of the harbour of Montevideo and made news all over the world.

It`s name:

The "Admiral Graf Spee"

Here is a wonderful history of the vessel, with a time line of it`s ultimate demise.

Admiral Graf Spee

If anyone fancies a build of this one, there are some stunning kits available with enhancements.

The biggest scale I`ve found is 1:350 which makes a sizeable model indeed.

E-bay has numerous kits available in a variety of scales, plus the enhancements.

Other retailers also stock this one, but be careful prices can vary greatly!!

Just wish I had the spare time for this one, maybe later, but will have to be after the anniversary.

Regards

Hi All, BigGrin

Well it finally arrived and looks real Cool

First pic below shows the box artAnd the second the hull sides.

Due to time constraints, this is serious straight out the box.

My first immediate concern is that the hull halves are going to need some serious clamping while they set.

Just holding the bow and stern sections together, there is a gap of at least 5mm mid-ships between the two parts.

Not insurmountable but an issue all the same.

The kit instructions also leave something to be desired.

The construction pics seem ok, but the painting guide is in black and white, "not good".

Hey Ho, onward and upward and with 16 days and counting it`s gonna be fun.Confused

Will see what can be done in the allotted time, may have to extend the finish time a "TAD", but we`ll see what happens.

Happy Building

Hi Alan, BigGrin BigGrin

Love the look of the "Biggun", but there were a few issues to that one:

Cost , time ,storage space, Oh and did I mention "COST" LOL

Project is under way as of today, so will post some progress tomorrow.

17th might end up a tall order, but will give it a shot.

Thanks for looking in and the encouragement.Cool Cool

Hi All, BigGrin BigGrin

Here we go with the build of the German Pocket Battleship,

"THE ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE"

Having removed the two halves of the hull from their fret, the first issue of this build became scarily obvious.

With the bow and the stern stuck together, the issue is obvious in the first pic.Crying

Ok, the above issue has been dealt with and hull painting is a task for tomorrow.

Now producing pics in close up shows everything "Warts and All"

In making the catapult airplane the window framing could do with a tidy up, but to the naked eye doesn`t look as bad as in pic 2. Blushing

The deck comes in three sections and I`m painting them prior to fitting, hoping that when they are fitted only a light touch-up job will be required.

Just to show that close-up`s can be your friend, the fore deck was brush painted (two coats)with Tamiya XF78 "wooden deck tan" and you can still see the planking detail in pic 3 and 4.Flapper

This kit comes with the option of making it as a waterline build, but not got the time to make a sea scene, so made and painted the supplied stand. Pic 5.

The other deck parts have had one coat of deck colour and the first deck part has been rested in place.

So here`s where I am at the moment.Pic 6.

More to be done tomorrow, so that`s it for now.BigGrin BigGrin

Hi Alan, BigGrin

Thanks for looking in, Cool Cool

Forgot how long it takes to paint one of these things in this scale, with the amount of parts and the detail, but striving on, albeit not in the order of the instructions as whilst one part is drying I`m looking out for another section to build.

Hull painting tomorrow, plus anything else I can fit in. Then working all weekend, so don`t know how much will get done then. Crying

Will keep on and see what happens.Blink

Hi Tony, BigGrin

Just got in from work, many thanks for taking the time to look in and the comments. Cool

They certainly did give her a severe bashing indeed, there are numerous pictures on the web showing some very large holes in the hull and another showing the catapult launched plane as a burnt out shell.

Those were the days when we had a naval force to be reckoned with, sadly no longer.

Well Happy Building

Hi All, BigGrin

Oh my, Crying

This is hard work. Available modelling time being the main concern, but this is where I`m at this morning.

I`ve decided to leave the hull painting as late as possible, so as to get as much of the build done in the available time. (Pre 17/12/2014)

So here`s where it now stands:Two pics below.

Unfortunately got to work tomorrow, so next available time will be Saturday.

Will paint the hull then and start on the assembly of the completed parts.

On top of the last picture there are the following to do :

Fit decks and parts shown in last pic
Fit 57 Railing sections
Fit 108 more parts, thankfully most are singular parts that just need putting in place.
Decals to be put in place.

So, just a bit to do Crying Crying , but will still be trying to finish by 17th December.

Never say never Eh!! LOL LOL LOL

Happy building
