If i lay the sapele strip flush to the hull at the bow it curves upwards away from the marked line. I think i could soak it and then bend to shape...is that the right way to go? otherwise it will clinker Current Build SotS

Not doing this one so not 100% sure of your issue without a pic. But yes most likly you need to form the strip to shape. A plank bender or steam from the kettle are both quick solutions. if you have not done it before try ond some scrap first. The initial sapele strips at the bow are covered and/or painted further in the build. Therefore, my advise would be to let the strip find its own curve at the bow and put in a small infill to bring it back to the guide line. Hope this helps. Hi Joe, you should allow the sapele strip lie where it wants to go and not in any way force it into position, if that means it wants to rise up the bow then allow it to happen... Derek is correct, the lowest edge of the sapele will be painted over by the red band so won't be seen. As long as the lowest edge of the sapele is more than 21mm from to top edge of the bow then you will be fine. Have attached a pic to show you the measurements to work from and how it should look, you will see how much of the sapele needs to show above the red band.... hi Joe.I can see where your coming from,your worried about the clinker effect? I tapered my veneer so that is kept to a reasonable line, but don't worry too much as the paint lines will make it look correct. If your not painting, the wales and wale strips will bring it back into line,a few pics would help us to give you better advice though. hope your enjoying the experience, and good luck.
