Presume you mean the middle deck gun support rails, they sit upright/vertical.

Hi Turboman
I had to think about this problem too. The answer is in the shape of the frames.
If you have a look at my attachment diagram you can see that the beams on the lower gun deck are positioned against the flat surface of the frame.
the problem arises with the curvature of the hull (which I have over-emphasized in the diagram to accentuate it).
The mid-deck (if that's what it's called - I'm probably incorrect on that but anyway, I hope you get the gist) beam is a tight fit betwen the deck and the underside of the supports for the next deck above it, so if I'm right, the beam should end up vertical as with the beam on the lower deck
Hope this helps you out and sorry about the sketch, I'm not too good at drawingBigGrin
Regards and happy building

Sorry Turboman,
The attachment i wanted to send doesn't seem to be working. I do apologise and hope that the explanation will suffice if you check it out with your build.

Hi turboman
Really sorry I couldn't get that drwing to you but if you have a look at Tomick's build log parts 16-20, you'll see some excellent photos near the bottom of the page which show the way the beams lay in relation to the frames and deck
All the best

Hi turboman
hope I,m not to late with this reply i tend to agree with you if you put the beam in straight there is a gap at the bottom due to the angle of the ribihave dry fitted it and it does not look right I would have thought taht it should have had a slight bevel on the bottm and top sides to fit flush with the rib as any one else any ideas

I had to cut mine quite a bit so they were not as tall to allow them to fit into place; I believe they sit vertical, but if its the same as mine, once cut to fit the gap is relatively small. If you think in the long run, when the hull is planked and the inside is completely dark, you wont notice the gap anyway

Hi Guys,
With regard to the Middle Deck Gun Support, if you bevel the bottom edge in order to fit flush to the rib you will find that when the dummy cannon are fitted they will be pointing skyward.
I have made small spacers to fit the space between the support and rib bottom in order that the support is braced firmley, it also makes for a better curve.
You can if you wish use filler to fill the gap before painting but as you will not be able to see much once the hull is complete it is not really neccessary.
This is only my opinion but maybe it helps.
Cheers

do not worry,do as tomic say's,by the time you cut out the gunport, and painted inside black you won't see anything,as for filling the gaps, well if you have time on your hands go for it,I suspect by the time you've finished filling, the victory will weigh a ton.

The gun deck support walls should be vertical, offer the wood up to where it is supposed to sit up to the ribs if there is a gap between the gun deck support and the deck, taper each end at the bottom until the gun deck wall fits snugly with the deck itself, that is what I have done...it is a case of trial fitting and shaving the wood off as necessary...Wink

Like I said before, the middle deck beam is intended to sit upright as shown in the magazine, the purpose of the middle deck beam is for the mounting of dummy gun barrels, any gap between frame and beam because of frame curve won't be seen once paintd on the inside and planked on the outside, having said that, there is no reason why you cannot shape the middle deck suport beams for an angled fit to suit the frame curve, but you'll need to ensure dummy barrel mount holes are drilled perfectly parallel.

Those thinking of adding full canon kits to the middle deck should omit the middle deck beams, deck the entire middle deck and have to hand built guns ready to install before the next deck is located (upper deck), though the middle deck gun ports will need to have been cut beforehand.

Your info is a saviour but your last post hasn't sunk in. If I want a full gun deck I omit what? Sorry perhaps this enquiry should go somewhere else.

You know the long planks that you would have to bend and nail to the ribs, the ones we been painting black, you would leave them off the ship to be able to fit a full cannon.

If you want a full compliment of guns on the middle gun deck you need to omit the gun deck support beams supplied within issues 18/19 (4 in total), but you won't be able to place these gun kits until the middle deck gun ports are cut at issue 27, and you'll also not be able to locate the upperdeck until you've completed your intended content of the middle deck, presumably you have to hand the of gun kits needed as full gun kits are not being supplied for the middle deck.

Further gun barrel supports are added to the middle gun deck rails deck in 27, which in your case should be omitted.
