Well with a New Year now in full swing my thoughts have again turned to producing a build diary. I have no set time to devote to hobbies for a number of reasons so I cannot guarantee this will be a quick build but I really want to try and see this one through as I am terrible at starting models only to then side line them to some future date by which time some other modelling idea/project is in my mind.

The intention at the moment is to try and be more focussed and aim to make a weekly post over a weekend on progress to date (well that is the intention so lets see how I get on).

A very good in box review of this kit has already been posted by Jase so I will not cover that area in any further detail.

Please note that any company name mentioned in my build or the names of parts/tools/accessories/paints or the like should in no way infer or be taken that these are endorsements of said items and that suitable alternatives and options are always available to each modeller as they feel fits the required purpose.

So with that a very warm welcome to my build diary of the Occre Kit of Francis Drakes "Her Majesty's Ship" Revenge.

I have had my eye on this kit since it was made availabe early in 2014. It appealed to me on its historical importance, price, and above all its colour decoration.

I ordered my kit from CMB (Cornwall Model Boats) just before Chrsitmas as they had one of those "extra 5% discount" weekends running. When I receive it initial inspection did give some slight disappointmnet in that all of that colour is to be applied from a colour laser printed sheet. Not overly happy with this but if the box image can be achieved then maybe its acceptable.

Of interest is that Mamoli Produced a model of the Golden Hind and in its original guise it had silk screen printed wooden overlays for the decoration although I belive as time passed they changed to self adhevive printed plastic so I guess its all down to costs.

Two other areas of concern are that the rudder and sternpost, keel and a couple of other parts are laser cut into "cheap" ply which the manufacturer has tried to disguise by coating in walnut stain (and not very well). Looks like this will need to be replaced but will concern myself with that nearer to the time. Sapelly is the choice for the second planking layer which from a personal perspective I do not like so again that maybe an area I look to change. There are one or two other very minor issues that I personally do not like but those I will discuss as the build progresses.

Don't get me wrong this is a very well put together kit but with anything we all have our own views of what we like and what we don't and I am sure others will have different views to me.

As the build progresses I now doubt will be ably "hindered" by my shipmate Tinker:

Right lets get on with the build (about time I hear you say LOL ).

1. As with most kits of this type we start with the construction of the actual Hull.

The bulk of the Hull framework is on two main frets with some additional infill parts on a third fret. These are identified and numbered as per the fret guide /part numbers plan included in the kit (the first 3 pictures below).

2.Having cut these parts from the fret by cutting into the attachment tabs on one side of the fret and then finishing by cutting completly having turned over the fret (the forth picture below).

3. What I then did was to remove the ash from the parts which is left as a result of the laser cutting process. Gently does this stage of the buld as you want to remove the ash but do not want to start removing wood and altering the shape of these components. The fifth picture below shows the tools I have used for cleaning up the parts and the sixth picture showing some huge "sausage fingers" holding one of the frames will hopefully allow you to see how the part starts to look as the ash is removed.

It is very important to keep the false keel straight and true to prevent later problems such as the famous "Bannana Boat Twist" happening (sounds like a dance LOL)

As this is a relatively small size build and the ply is quite thick I have opted to use the Amati Keel Clamp for this one. Anything larger would have seen the sort of baseboard we are familiar with from such builds as the Victory and Soverieign of the Seas.

1. Having clamped up the False Keel I did a test fit of the frames to ensure that first and foremost they fit without being either too tight or too lose for the slots in the Keel (Pictures 1 and 2 below).

2. Having satisfied myself that the frames fitted well and are nice and level along the top of the keel (ie not dropping too far into the keel slots) its time to start gluing up.

3. My prefered method of getting the frames square to the keel involves using a square (possible 2) and in this case some rather nice 1.5" Irwin quick clamps.

My glue of choice for this one is "Titebond" original Wood Glue.

Pictures 3-5 show the process of gluing and clamping up the frames.

Well thats as far as I have progresed at the moment so will continue to glue in the frames and aim to post further updates next weekend.

Many thanks for the kind comments. Not really had experience of a proper build diary so a bit of a learning process as things tick along.

As to ship names I believe the Golden Hind was previously known as Pelican. Revenge was built in 1577 and was eventually captured by the Spanish in 1591. She was involved in a major battle with the Spanish fleet including the San Felipe. Just about destroyed she was captured but never made it back to Spain due to the extensive damage. I don't believe Revenge was ever re-named during its period of service.

Many thanks and best wishes with that Lancaster build as it's a monster kit that is very complex with all those stringers to add. But from what I have seen your doing great justice to this.

The "ships cat" is just hanging around for the first opportunity to start chewing. Masts and bowsprits are his favourite. He might be sound asleep one minute but just turn your back for a second and he's causing havoc and destruction.

Next part of my build is set for Saturday with my diary update on Sunday. It's going to be a steady build as I am learning as I go and really want to get at least one model started and finished which is something I have failed to achieve for so long now.

Kind regards

Tony

Wonder if one day someone will produce a "Queen Anne's Revenge" wooden kit, which was the name of Blackbeard's pirate galleon.
