can anybody offer a definitive answer to the above question? I have always been of the impression the British Navy began to use the term 'His Majesties Ship' around the time of the 1707 Acts of Union, not long after the establishment of a full and formal Navy. with the abbreviation 'HMS" becoming common later that century. But i was unable to confirm that on the net after a brief look. Jase “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Think I am right in saying that the earliest example of this abbreviation being used is in 1789 when it was used for HMS Phoenix.
Before this, warships were referred to as their full title, the Kings/Queens ship and not as His/Her Majesty's ship, which the latter title then followed until the late 18th century.

Thanks Mr T, the 1789 bit was certainly my understanding. Any other views? “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

In which case my "Hms Revenge" will have to be changed to "Her Majesty's Ship" That is a very good question raised and nice to see the answer Mr T. Happy Modelling

And HMS Sovereign of the Seas wasn't HMS nor possibly His/Her Majesty's Ship, as when it emerged from refit in 1660, it was then renamed His/Her Majesty's Ship Royal Sovereign and not as HMS.

Indeed it was seeing your build review and the lack of HMS on the box that posed the question. we are educated now “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain
