Sorry to hear that your frames were broken, are they going to replace them? Mine were delivered on a large piece of MDF wrapped in two thick layers of bubble wrap inside a box, and survived the journey well!

Thanks for your comments, still looking for an outlet that can supply the paint by the gallon . Managed to get myself an airbrush kit that will make the job easier though.

Hi there DaDokta,
Apologies, I didn't fully take on board your post and misread it.
To answer your question more appropriately, first of all, in my humble opinion, the MDF used by marinemodelwerks is slightly inferior in quality to that used by Hachette and is slightly more pliable.
So when using it in the build, I had the assembled parts of the right-hand side lying flat on a large board so as to avoid any warping of the material. When it came to assembling the left-hand side, I used a couple of those black plastic clamps of a medium size, clamping them to the already assembled right-hand side, and using them as a temporary stand. My thinking was that the hull being 'fat' in the middle, and 'thin' at each end; if it were left lying on its side, then gravity would lend a hand and the 'thin' ends would sag down towards the work surface and cause a significant warp. Standing it upright avoided that problem. There is a photo to illustrate this in the build diary "Riff raff's U-96" post #79

BUILD UPDATE #14
Hi everyone, this weeks update continues the fitting of the transverse frames to the left-hand side of the hull. The parts comprised of 1 laser-cut sheet containing transverse frames 53, 54, 55, 56, 57. Parts 78 and 79 to be stored for future use.
Frames 53 and 54 were test fitted and glued into place on main bulkhead 2-L, followed by frames 55 and 56, frame 56 being butted up against 55 and glued into place on main bulkhead 3-L.
Lastly, frame 57 was glued into position on part 3-L.
That's it for this weeks update and thanks for looking in.

Hi David, nice to see it coming together and tony, part 54 is actually quite easy to fit, the problem i had is i did not line it up properly so when i fitted the cross beams in issue 19 they did not fit without a bit of reovation - and as it was glued you cannot go back a stage.  current builds

Thanks for your kind compliment. It's good to hear from members of other forums who wouldn't normally post on this one taking the plunge.
You are very welcome here and any comments you may have from time to time would be most welcome.
You may have spotted that there are 3 or 4 other members posting their own U-96 build diaries on here and they would be worth a look as well as this one. There's a good video diary on YouTube by one of our European friends and he is 6 months ahead of us here in the UK so its a nice diversion to look in on him sometimes to see what's coming up.

BUILD UPDATE #15
Hi everyone and thanks for all the kind comments.
This week sees the completion of the left-hand side of the hull (Part 41-L) and continuing the fitting of 2 more transverse frames (Parts 58 and 59).
Two other parts are included in this weeks issue (Parts 80 and 81) which are stored for future use.
After removing part 41-L from the first laser-cut sheet and filing the edges, it was test fitted with no problems and so glued into position, clamped down and left to dry.
Frames 58 and 59 were then dry fitted and then glued into place in their relevant slots on part 3-L which is the cut out section for the control room.
No problems encountered this week, but it looks as though I may have some remedial work to do later on because the slots in the transverse frames don't appear to line up accurately (particularly noticeable at frames 55/56). I suspect that I wasn't careful enough when lining up frame 56 to frame 55, but a small file should be able to sort it out.
That's about it for this week. Now have to wait in anticipation for my next subscription delivery of issues 16 - 19.

Thanks Graeme, I've also just spotted - as some of the more eagle-eyed viewers may have - I've made a slip-up on the bow section which needs fixing as well.
When we bought the forward torpedo room conversion kit, the transverse frames for the cutaway were different shapes for left and right-hand sides. The left-hand side frames had a 'thicker' vertical section on them to support the side wall of the interior compartment.
I failed to notice this difference when assembling the parts and consequently I have a frame which should have been on the left-hand side fitted to the right-hand side.
This will need the attention of rather more than a little filing. I guess applying water to the wayward joints to soften the adhesive, and some careful 'scraping' and 'gouging' with a craft knife will free the mis-placed frames from their current location. Luckily, I don't tend to go 'over the top' with my use of adhesive so I don't foresee this being too much of a problem.
Something that my be of interest to you Graeme, is a link to a German forum which I stumbled across - post #132 on my previous page (7) - which I translated with Google. I found it very interesting and I hope you enjoy it too.

Thanks Riff raff. It's all sorted now and all the frames are where they should be. It was an easier job than I thought it would be - the hardest part being to get a clean break from the locating slots without damaging the tabs on the frames - after a liberal soak with a wet rag, they came away easily. My main concern was using water on the MDF, thinking that soaking it would weaken this composite material, but my worries were ill-founded. The latest issues (16-19) arrived this week so I can move on with the build again at the weekend with no delays.

Hi David take care using water with MDF as it sucks it up like a sponge and turns to mush. I would try a micro saw and trim the frame off the keel then just swop them over.
