Reading between the lines, it seems that although the US was already looking at cutbacks in the number of bases they have in Europe and that the loss of US bases in the UK was inevitable, the situation hasn't been helped by the fact that the US decision makers are also getting quite jumpy about Russian President Vladimir Putins' recent "sabre rattling" episode in the Ukraine and this is all part of an urgent plan to move a few strategic "chess pieces" around in order to bolster the US Military presence in Eastern Europe - basically a "watch your step" warning to Russia that the US is ready and waiting if he tries to expand any further?
Very sad news though for the local communities with the loss of a significant number of jobs and to the local economy with all that revenue about to disappear!!
An interesting piece of news Tom - thanks for posting!!

Bet they go the way of Upper Heyford and end up as industrial parks. It is indeed a huge blow to the local communities, and also means we'll see far less US aircraft buzzing around the UK

Yeah, what a depressing thought Tom.
The US does have some very interesting equipment when it comes to aviation - the F-18 Hornet is in my top five sexiest looking jets of all time - and to not see the American planes around so regularly will be a great loss for any UK aviation buffs?
That's the annoying thing about any war, nobody in there right mind wants it and yet the flip side of it all for most aviation/military buffs is that there will always be something interesting flying over your head or trundling down a country lane unexpectedly!! Very dangerous times indeed for humanity when the constant spectre of World War 3 was waiting just the wrong side of a button press, but how cool was it during the years of the 'Cold War' when there were many UK bases full of things like the British Vulcan, Valiant and Victor or the awesome English Electric Lightning, and then on the US bases there were the B-52 bombers, F-15s and occasionally to be seen, the SR-71 Blackbirds??
I somehow think the UK Mid Counties are going to be quite a bit quieter when the US Military leaves those bases?!

Looks like we will be seeing a US presence in the UK for some time yet - the first 2 US F-35 squadrons coming to Lakenheath - not just yet though, 2020 http://www.raf.mod.uk/ne...ased-in-the-uk-09012015
