Hi,

I have an issue with the stern deck and want to get some advice before I start cutting. When I place the stern deck on the bulkheads I find it rests on bulkhead #8 and #12 but floats a tiny bit above the bulkheads in between. So the question is, should I build up the lower bulkheads, trim down the higher ones or just leave it alone?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve
Not building this myself so cant be specific but if it's anything like the stern decks on the Trinidad and Victory then, provided your frames are in properly, the deck should rest on all the frames, this will mean there will be a very slight curve in the deck.
The deck will need to be weighted down while being glued to make sure it is in contact with frames 8-12

Hi Steve,

I considered that, but thought a curve in the deck could be an issue down the road. For instance, here is an image from the next step in the build log. The dark colored vertical piece that the next deck sits on, sits on the stern deck. I would think that if there was a slope in the stern deck, the vertical piece wouldn't sit flat on the stern deck.

Thanks,
Steve

When you say stern deck, do you mean the lower or upper stern deck, or poop deck, or can you say which stage number you are at?

The steps aren't numbered but it's the last step of Pack 1 (US) page 48 step J. It would be the lower stern deck that isn't resting on the frames between 8 and 12.

Thanks,

Ah right got it.

If the ribs are fully seated, there is indeed slight curve in this deck, and you'll need to clamp the deck to the beams for it to sit properly and its should then rest on all of the beams.

If any of the beams have uneven heights from one to the next, then its possible the ribs are not fully seated. If you post a photo of your build in this area then we can guide further if necessary.

Have attached a pic of how mine looks..

I think I have it right as the false deck below sits squarely on the frames (like in yours shown in the pic). I just thought I had done something wrong as the lower stern deck rested on frames 8 and 12 and 9 - 11 shorter then those frames. This is what led me to believe either frame 8 or 12 was sitting too high. So curved it is. :-)

Thanks,
Steve

Thinking about it, I may not have described the situation quite right. Since the frames at both ends of the deck (frames 8 & 12)are higher then the other frames, the deck would have more of a slight concave depression in the center, then an overall curve. If that matters any.

Check that the front bulkhead fitted at Step f, fits beneath without a gap on its top side.

I assume you mean step F of the final step in Pack 1. That step you place the cross bar on frame 9.

Sorry for the confusion,
Steve

Ah, Pack 2. Yes, it's a good fit.
