Hi again,

Another work in progress, I'll try & do this one more like a diary & update as I go along.

Tamiyas Zero kit is superb even though it is 8-9 yrs old now. Great attention to detail, nicely scribed panels and rivets, just have to careful I don't loose them!

I also have the Big Ed set for this & I generally love Eduard, but a little disappointed with this one. I have only been using the interior set so far & it seems that a large chunk of the etch won't be seen & there's a mass of tiny wingnuts, switches etc that will be a nightmare to keep attached & then they omit fronts for the radios which would have looked great in colour etch.

Anyway enough whining!

I've almost finished the cockpit tub which is very well detailed straight from the box. A little more weathering required I think.

Thanks for looking.

Wilfy

Hi,

I've also got the fuselage together, no problems here & I like the fact the rear fuselage top is done as inset piece, so no join line down the centre, the joins actually run along a rivet line, so with some careful polishing I shouldn't loose any detail.

Thanks for looking.

Have now started on the main instrument panel, this is where I love the coloured etch, much better than a decal & I could never paint the detail.

I tend to attach the panels using Micro Krystal Klear, put on a little extra & it oozes through the dials & dries so clear that it looks like glass.

Thanks again.

Great job so far Wilfy, thought I was looking at the DeAg Zero for a minute there. She'll be a stunner when she's finished!

Love your idea about using an excess of Krystal Klear and the dial glass effect - nice thinking. What brand of paint did you use for the 'Aotake' blue? it looks very good. I use Lifecolor Aoatake, which to my eye is the most accurate looking? I'll be using that in my Japanese 'Gekko' build.

Keep the updates coming Wilf, watching with interest. CoolThumpUp

P.S - I might be wrong but I think Jase did the Tamiya 1:32 Zero build (with all the etch) when the DeAg Zero was first released. I think it's in the 'Finished Build Gallery' and might be worth looking at? Also there is the 'Zero' Reference Library' which I started when I was 'SennaMentalMe' and that is full of info which will help you if you need it?

Hi Kev,

Thanks for the comments.

The Aotake is from Lifecolor, didn't fancy mixing the Tamiya ratios & I also think it's pretty close & also easy to work with.

I'll check out Zero info, any references always help.

Thanks again.

Hi All,

Sorry about delays in posts, just don't seem to get the timeConfused

Here's a few posts & pics of where I am up to now.

First pic: shows the completed instrument panel & is more Eduard parts than Tamiya, I do feel that adding colour etch to a cockpit is one of the best upgrades that you can do. I could never paint the detail & decals just don't look the part in my opinion, fairly cheap to buy as well.

Second pic: Ammo containers, not much to say here.

Third Pic: Fuel tank & oil tank. Could have done a bit more clean up here, mould part lines still showing but they won't be visible once fitted.

Fourth Pic: Wing machine gun assemblies (type 97, 7.7mm) These were painted with Gunze Buffable Dark Iron & buffed up using a dry flat brush & cotton buds. You can't really see it in the pic but it gives a very realistic sheen, only problem is with this stuff is that it remains buffable forever & can get everywhere if not sealed in.

All other painting was done with Tamiya Acrylics.

Thanks for looking.

Just another little update.

First Pic: Shows oil/fuel tank fitted to fuselage.

Pics 2-5: Show cockpit assembly fitted to fuselage, I must say fit was perfect with no jiggling, fiddling or messing around.

Pretty impressed with this kit so far.

Thanks for looking.

Nice update Wilfy and some fine modelling going on here. Love the cockpit, very detailed and that coloured etch certainly does look good!! Did you have any problems with the paint flaking off on those seatbelts when you bent them down into the seat contours?

This kit is one that I intend to build at some point in the next year or two along with Tamiya's recent 1:32 F4U 'Birdcage' Corsair? Drool Drool

Nice build Wilfy, thanks for posting and looking forward to seeing more. Cool ThumpUp

The only issue i had with the pre painted etch was colour matching the cockpit green.

Thanks for all your comments.

Had no problems at all with the seatbelts apart from getting them to sit properly Blink

I do much prefer the fabric seatbelts that are available now. A tad fiddly to assemble but worth it, as they look so real & sit very well.

I have the Birdcage as well, lovely kit & I recently invested in the Eduard resin cockpit, which looks superb.

Hi all,

Slightly boring update here!

Fitted the wing guns, these were painted with Gunze Mr Metal Buffable & buffed with a soft brush.

The sheen doesn't show in the pictures but looks quite convincing to the naked eye.

Thanks

Another small update.

This is the first part of the kit that annoyed meGlare

The undercarriage is re-tractable, nice if your into gimmicks but not for me!

The flap sections that you can see in the picture were not too annoying but there are some smaller flaps fitted at the other end of the undercarriage housing that were a real pain to get sitting right, thy have two tiny metal hinges & aligning them so that the flaps closed properly was a bit of nightmare.

Will have some pics on next post of this.

Have started the engine now & wanted to detail it up using the Eduard engine set, it's a lovely set of etch but the jury is out at the moment as I've had to set it aside for the minute to avoid frustrationConfused

Thanks for looking.

I have found that on a couple of my builds. Why on a static model would you want moving parts? Options, fair enough if there are 2 or 3 versions, but fully working parts, like your under carriage flaps is beyond me!! Very nice update again, and great work. Looking forward to seeing the engine detail!!BigGrin BigGrin
