Gun ports.
I have fallen behind schedule due to illness (recovered) and a long holiday touring Tasmania. Making the gun ports as shown in issue 31 is proving tricky (but I am getting there!). In browsing the Forum I came across a picture of a gun port construction which looked quite different. It appeared that the port holes had been cut out in the strakes but had no insert (as shown in Kit 31). Each port hole had a frame round it (cut from strakes?) and that was all. Possibly much easier but not sure if I should follow that route. I am making the ports out of beech which is a lovely wood to work with.

Hi Peter, hope I understand your post correctly. I think it is all down to how you want your finished build to look. There are many ways of creating gun ports and the way the instructions are set out gives you a gun port with the depth needed to accommodate the fitting of the supplied gun barrels. The way you describe gives the appearance of a gun port but will be very shallow and doing it this way would lead to further problems when you come to fit the gun barrels. Personally, I went down the route as per the instructions, agree it was a very fiddly and time consuming process but at the same time I felt the effort was so very worthwhile…. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Alan

Thanx, Alan. Your comment about locating & fixing the gun barrels definitely points me to the prescribed procedure as you advise. Peter G
