Thanks for the nice comments guys, they are very much appreciated!! Cool ThumpUp

@ Tom - Thanks for the video link, there are some very useful 'freeze frame' shots in that!!

P.S. - I've noticed that the first photo in my sequence hasn't uploaded like the rest of them? I normally use Photobucket for my build shots but I'm trying out the ModelSpace 'Attach Files' option to see how I get on with it? Can anyone tell me why it hasn't uploaded properly and how to fix it as this system doesn't seem to allow any photo edits once you've clicked 'Back' at the end of the posting process? Huh Confused

Cheers,

Hello Andy and thanks for your input, much appreciated. I used to use 640 x 480 which is known as 'Bulletin Board' size but found that 800 x 600 works as well but gives a slightly larger picture (obviously) whilst still showing as an image and not as a link? What I don't understand is that every other picture in my last post is also sized at 800 x 600 or 600 x 800 depending on whether it is 'Landscape' or 'Portrait' format and yet they have all shown as images, so why has the first one failed to show? The only other thing I can think of is that the picture has too many KBs, though it isn't far off the same size of the others? Is there no way of editing the attached files once it is done?

Thanks for your help Andy. ThumpUp

Hi Kev, when you MS to upload you pics there is no way of editing them, all you can do is delete the pic from the post by clicking on the 'Attach' button, edit and upload the new edited version. Can do a short guide if you need it.

Hi Kev
I think if you go back into attach and delete the offending picture you can then repost but you may find that you will need to delete all the pics and repost them all to keep them in sequence.

Hello Alan and Andy,

Thanks for that, I think you are both saying the same thing in a different way! Blink Alan, if you could do a short tutorial of how to edit the pics that would be great and very much appreciated?

The only reason I have started using the MS 'attach' option is because I lost a lot of images on Photobucket last year - through no fault of my own I might add - and thought this way might be safer, though it seems that there are a lot less ways of manipulating or editing your image streams with the MS system?

Cheers for that guys. Cool ThumpUp

Hi Kev, here is a quick step by step..

1. Go to the post containing the pic.
2. Click on the 'Attach' button
3. Click on the 'Delete' button next to the file you wish to delete.
4. Locate the original file, right click and select edit.
5. Click on 'Resize'
6. Click on the 'Pixels' spot
7. Select 600 (Horizontal)
8. Ensure 'Maintain aspect ratio' is ticked.
9. Click on OK.
10. Go back to your post and click on 'Attach' again and upload as normal.

Andy is right, if you wish to maintain the order of the pics then delete them all and upload in the order you want.

You may also find this tutorial I put together useful too

Hope this helps..

Hello Alan and many thanks for your assistance, the guide has been very helpful and I think I'll try deleting and reinstalling later? I have a feeling it may be the file size (as in number of KBs?) that is causing the problem with my first photo?

The one thing I don't like about the 'Attach Files' system is that you can't place text between the photos, which is my usual preferred style in a diary and is easy with Photobucket, whereas with this method it has to be annotated text followed by a stream of photos with number sequences? I'll see what I can do with this way of doing it, though I may revert to using Photobucket next time if I'm not happy.

Thanks again Alan and Andy for your help, much appreciated. Cool ThumpUp

Should be more along soon - I won't keep it from you too long I promise!! BigGrin Cool ThumpUp

Hi Kev, happy to be of assistance.... Not being able to add text in between pics is one of the downfalls of the MS system but its the system I have used since the start and have become quite used to it.... For me, I've seen a number of builds/posts where the pics uploaded using photo bucket have suddenly disappeared and that put me off using it....Cool Cool Cool Like everything else with this hobby, everyone does things their way..... Hope you come to a happy landing soon....

Thanks for that Alan much appreciated. The reason Photobucket was a problem for me was that, foolishly, I didn't keep back-up copies on my PC so when they disappeared from my Photobucket account I had no way of retrieving them and they were gone for good?! If I'm honest, I do prefer the Photobucket way, having now tried the MS system, and I think I'll go back to Photobucket from my next build update, simply because I can manipulate my text more easily and present the diary in a better way and which suits me? Just need to back up my photos in future I think - a lesson learnt there?!

Hello all,

If anybody who is following my "Johnnie" E Johnson tribute build wants to learn more about this great man then may I recommend the book below, which I am currently reading?

It is certainly a great read - highly recommended!! Cool ThumpUp

I am also waiting for a great book on the Rolls-Royce Merlin Engine which will be extremely useful for reference on my engine build. It's not published until 5th March, which may hold up my engine build somewhat, but I've got it on pre-order with Amazon and as soon as it arrives I'll be cracking on with the scratchbuilding of extra details on my engine!!:

You can buy it here if you want one?: http://www.amazon.co.uk/...e_313651_64660081_em_ti

Hello all,

I’ve been very busy lately with work so haven’t had a lot of modelling time, but I have been snatching the odd hour or two here and there and have managed to add some of the extra detail that I said I was going to be scratch-building on the Merlin engine. This kit is one of, if not the most detailed Spitfire plastic kits out there, but going through my very comprehensive reference material I have come to realise that actually there is quite a bit of detail which isn’t included and whilst this is a nice rendition of the Merlin as a standard build, some of the missing detail is quite basic and really should have been included for the price, so building it as supplied in the kit really didn't satisfy my eye for detail. I want to take this model to a much higher level, so it seems I have a lot to do and a long way to go before it even resembles a complete Spitfire Mk.IX engine.

Before detailing the engine I decided that I wanted to have an engine stand to display it on and also to make it easier to photograph the work for my diary, so I set about building one out of plastic rod, stretched sprue and sheet and then sprayed it gloss black to add a bit of appeal.

Next job was to start on the details. Before I could do that though, I noticed that there was a distinct gap between the underside of the rocker covers and the camshaft drive tubes which fit beneath them so I added some shims from plastic card to take up the gap – not Tamiya’s usual standard there!!

Next job was to add the Eduard etched brass ignition harnesses, which included the HT leads and the spark plugs. However, the harnesses themselves look a little 2D in flat brass, when they should be more tubular, with the leads and plugs being passable as they were once folded and glued and a bit of paint will also help them look more 3D. The rather flat etched brass ignition parts can be seen in the photo of the Eduard fret below.

To make the harness tubes more 3D, I added a semi-circular strip of stretched sprue to each side of the flat brass, thus giving a more tubular appearance which should look fine when painted.

On the real Merlin the harnesses connect to a quite large diameter braided tube, which connects to the magnetos and the braided tubes also serve the purpose of reducing radio interference from the high voltages that run through the ignition leads. These were replicated out of stretched sprue and added to the ignition harnesses. I also added some very small pieces of fine sprue to indicate the ‘screw’ part of a circlip (which will be suggested by painting a silver line around the connection later). I also drilled some holes in the cylinder heads to receive the spark plugs when they are fitted.

The ignition harnesses will be fitted to the engine once it has been painted. I then moved on to fabricating some of the various high-pressure and low-pressure oil pipes, coolant pipes and various other pipes that keep the engine cool and lubricated and also some pipes around the reduction housing at the front of the engine which will connect to the propeller pitch control assemblies later. All of the pipes were made from various thicknesses of fuse wire, floristry wire and anything else that I could find in my scrap box. I also added some missing bolt heads, pipe unions and other items out of small sections of stretched sprue, which you can just see in the photos below. Some of the pipes are still to be connected at one end where they connect to the wheel housing as I want to be able to disassemble the various engine modules to make it easier to paint them. One or two small etched parts were added like the priming 'volute' pipes on the induction manifold and a small plate on the end of the intercooler pump, where I also drilled out a vent and added an air cooling inlet to the pump out of stretched sprue which was bent into a shallow 'S' shape and drilled.

The main engine block and the temporarily attached wheel housing were then primed using light grey Tamiya Fine Surface Primer. The photos below show primed parts:

That is as much of the detail that I have done to the main block and wheel housing and apart from one or two minor details which need to be added later, the main assembly is ready for paint.

Next I started adding some detail to the supercharger/intercooler section. There are two brackets on the front of the intercooler where the main induction pipe exits which are moulded too high up by Tamiya, they should be lower down and there should be a small angled flange and filler cap above it. The brackets were cut off and refitted lower and the flange and cap made from stretched sprue. I also added an exit pipe for the intercooler header tank and intercooler feed pipe that goes to the liquid cooled supercharger and where it joins the supercharger, I had to fabricate an entry flange that Tamiya has omitted. There were also several other small fittings to make and add to what is in my opinion an overly simplified intercooler, given that it sits right above the engine where it is easy to see? Not one of Tamiya’s better efforts and I think they could have done better there!!

That completes this update. I still have many more pipes and fittings to make and add to the supercharger/intercooler and the carburettor/induction trunking before this engine is anything like as detailed as the real thing? Thankfully, I have some very clear and comprehensive reference material that makes things a lot easier than they could be by just using photographs!!

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms are welcomed.
