BigGrin Hi All

This months parts are here including the two base ends but Il assemble these with the centre section when I get it. The rest of this months parts are I think the last for the Tender which have been added and painted.
I had decided at the build outset to replace what looked to me to be the plastic moulded coal with some coal from a railway diorama specialist of which I bought 2 packs of the O + Gauge 1 size which is the closest I could find to our 1/24 model and looks about right in size to me.
This is how I placed the coal in the tender, firstly cut a base plate that fits inside the tender from the parts backing card and glue in place. Then dilute some PVA glue with water add the coal and mix together so all the coal has a coating of the PVA mixture. Carefully add this mix to the tender and spread it out until your happy with its look and then leave to dry overnight.
I may add another bag to give it a more piled up look but I might not, If anyone is interested in doing the same with there tenders I will add the link below 2 bags will give the look i have on the tender right now if you want it higher then 3 bags should do it.

BigGrin Thanks every one for looking in and your comments, the coal is not real coal but a mineral that looks and weigh's the same without the dust and the other reason for using PVA as a fixative is that when dry it gives that shiny/oily look that real coal has when the light catches itCool

Hi Andy BigGrin .
I Love the coal Also it looks fantastic Cool .
I hope you don't mind me saying that another way of doing the coal in the tender is to use polystyrene as a base plate as you could have it thicker and then do your method on top. That way You might only use 1 bag of coal.
Great idea with the coal.
I look forward to seeing more.
Best regards.

BigGrin Hi Dave and Mark

Thanks both for looking in and your comments, the polystyrene is a good idea but after the inner base plate is fitted the gap is around 2/3 cm from the base to the top side edges and a cut out at the front will be needed so the coal can be seen at the top of the stokers hole.

That looks brilliant and the change from the moulded coal insert to scale coal makes all the difference.

Have you decided how you are going to finish your base? From the builds I have seen those plastic ballast inserts do not appear to fit together very well (appear to have gaps between) so would be really interested to see if it's possible to produce something similar using real ballast. Guess the issue will be ensuring the rolling road is not fouled and again (still months away from that stage) if you need access to the innards of the base for battery changes etc.

Excellant update as always

Happy Modelling

BigGrin Hi Tony

Thanks for looking in and your comments, looking at the base with the plastic track ballast I think it would be possible to replace it with a scale type ballast like the coal in the Tender.
The best way to do this would be to use the plastic ballast as a template to fix the sleepers in place. Then where there are the larger square holes around the sound box and main wheels use a clear plastic strip or some wood strip to form boxes once all that is in position remove all the plastic ballast and refill with the replacement ballast.

Lucky you - just 2 more to go and you will have all those great sound and lighting effects to "play with".

I have just had my pack 10 set through and have the sand pipes to finish this despatch.

You have made a lovely job of your build and hope you have enjoyed the build as much as I am.
Happy Modelling
