Hi,
I have started marking the lowest level of gun ports as shown in Issue 35 and have a couple of queries.
First a statement: The center deck portion of the hull is horizontal and the stern and bow deck sections are sloping up to the stern and bow. The dimensions from the bottom of the keel to the top of deck section are: Near the bow 120mm, at the center, 116mm & near the stern, 129mm.
Q1: The marking out measurements in Issue 35 start with a "horizontal" line drawn 23mm down from the top of the second deck (40/41/42). This means the gun ports will not be parallel to the water line at the stern and bow sections as has been mentioned in a earlier forum. Lowering the stern and bow gun ports will have the lower deck showing across the opening of the ports. The 23mm measurement is from the top of the lower deck.
Q2: I have measured the distance down from the top of deck sections 40/41/42 to the top of the deck below using a vernier gauge thru' the mast holes. There is approx 23 -24mm at the stern and center section, as there should be, but only 21.4mm at the bow section. This indicates I should not be sticking to the 23mm line in this section of the hull. If I do, the lower deck will be across the gun port opening. This again means these ports will not be in line with the center section ports, parallel to the water line.
Q3: I presume in the two sloping sections the gun ports will need to be kept vertical, ie needing a small wedge under one corner to compensate for the deck slope.

Hi Peter, will take a closer look at your query and get back to you later today. If I understand you correctly then one thing I will mention is the gunports are not running in a straight line along the hull parallel to the water line, they do rise slightly at the bow and stern area's as does the decks. It's the base and the top of each individual gunport that runs parallel to the waterline. Have a look at my diary from page 41, you will see when you look along the hull of the ship the height of the ports rising both at the bow and stern, page 43 shows this very well. http://forum.model-space...sts&t=5013&p=43
If I've misunderstood your query then do let me know... In the meantime, hope the above helps. Regards Alan

Thanx Alan, the art of writing non-ambiguous statements still has a long way to go! You have solved all my dilemmas with the simple statement that it is the top and bottom of the gun ports that have to be horizontal. I can resolve everything else in my post now that the locations of all the gun ports do not have to be parallel to the waterline. Many thanx again, cheers, Peter

Many thanx again, cheers, Peter Happy to be of help Peter, it's what we are here for. Simple rule, regardless of the height of your gunports each gunport's base should run parallel to the water line and I cannot recall any build where the gunports all run at exactly the same height from the water line. In addition, with these kits there will always be variances in measurements in every build due to the builder and the materials being used so pay close attention to the pics in what you are trying to achieve. In this case, you are trying to achieve a nice flowing line on your ports when viewed along the side of the hull and of course at a height where the cannons will sit neatly in the centre of each port. A tricky task yes, but with care and attention I'm sure you'll get there..... Would love to see some pics of your build to follow how you are progressing.... Good luck with the build.. Regards Alan

Alan, Will post some pics shortly when I have some port holes cut out and some ports installed. I have not installed strakes above the 40/41/42 deck level as I plan to fix the ports first and add the strakes after. Until I try this (and I have thought thru' how I intend to do this) I consider this the easier of the two "evils" for me!! Peter
