It depends on what finish you are wanting, if you are to polish the tiles and want them to remain so, then you'll need to clear coat with a chosen finish or seal with a clear primer. If left in natural state they will soon oxidise to being a dull brown colour, or you can possibly consider a verdigris effect which is probably the most natural look, which is the look that Steveie_o gave to his Vic build.

Hi, my friends!
Yesterday was a day to remember. Not only did the Austrian Ski-Heros (male and female) win the FIS-Worldcup once again (which i know, won`t be of much interest in a british forum . No, also - after 2 years and 2 months i finally finished the copper plating of the hull!!
I must say i´m very satisfied with the result as both sides really look symmetrical.
[size=8]Of course it`s not perfect and i will have to do some tidy up here and there (e.g. at the stern as i saw on one of the pictures). But as i said i`m very happy as it is. I never would have thought that i could achieve such a result - doing this for the first time. I will now let it oxidise the plates for a while and then apply matt varnish.
Next steps (when i find time) will be the stern gallery and the rudder, which i would like to finish before turning the hull on its feet again.
Thanks for looking in,

Walter A beautiful piece of work. That tiling looks so complex and I can just imagine how long it took but what a great finish you have achieved. It will make such a difference to your finished kit. Happy Modelling

Stunning finish on the tiling Walter, it was certainly worth it in the end. Now you can get on the rest of the build Steve

Thanks for all your nice comments, guys!
But here already comes my next problem:
How can you attach the rudder-hinges to the hull without destroying the plates?
Should i have attached the hinges before plating?
Or should i just super-glue the hinges onto the plates and make "fake-nails". Cause i don`t think i get the nails through the plates.
How did you manage this problem?
Thanks,
WalterGreetings, Walter

Hi Walter, Great work BTW. I just glued mine onto the copper plates. Below is an extract from my build log. While my attention is on the copper plating, I will mention the rudder. Again, because of the time involved, I can't remember exactly, but the rudder supplied by Del Prado was incorrect. I think I used their rudder and re-shaped and sized it by adding additional timber. I made the gudgeons and pintles from small brass tube, strap and rods, shaping as required and soldering the parts together, then painting black. Below is a close up of one of the gudgeon plates. The rudder was then copper plated and the pintles fixed to it. Here is the finished rudder with all the gudgeon plates next to it. Also notice the spectacle plate above the copper on the right, I made this in the same way as the gudgeons and pintles. Below is a photo of the rudder in place, I have lifted it slightly to show the pintles fitting into the gudgeon plates. Regards Alan England expects that every man will do his duty.

I think Id mark and pre-drill holes through the copper for the pins to be used Steve

Thanks for your tips. Steve, i certainly thought of pre-drilling holes through the plates - but i`m afraid this will deform (?) some of the plates or make them come off (excuse my english).
But i guess, i will have to try it and who knows, maybe it will work. For me every step is try and error :)
I will let you know of the results.
But first i will finish the gallery supports.

Greetings, Walter Stick a couple of copper tiles to a piece of plank off-cut, get a nice sharp micro bit in a pin vice and have a try. If you are only going to drill through the copper then a drill of the same diameter as the pins will do. If you are going to drill through the planks as well then a hole of a smaller diameter will be needed to make a tight fit for the pins. You will also need to shorten the pins used in the rudder. Steve

The method I used was to gently hamer the nail point in through the hole in the hinge then remove the pin cut it short add a blob of CA and then push back in with a pin pusher. the sharp point will go through without deforming the copper tile. jase “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Those are good news, Jase!
Maybe i should have tried it before bothering you with my questions. But i wanted to hear about your experiances first.
Thanks for all your tips,

Walter, That looks great, the rivets are fantastic. How did you get the patina on the tiles? Dominick

Hi Dominick, well getting the patina on the tiles is the easiest part - you just have to take two years to complete the tiling, like i did - and time will make the patina for you :) No joke - i did nothing. The patina comes by itself - as long as the oxygen can get to the copper - so don`t varnish. Greetings, Walter Greetings, Walter
