Read lots of comments about double planking the Hull , Can any one tell me what veneer would they use ?? Oak ?? When veneering the hull you going to stick it on in thin strips like planking , if so how can you make the joints stand out , Would Linen thread be a good idea as suggested for planking the Decks ? Malcolm Hi and welcome to the forum  The choice of veneer depends on personal taste, my guess is that those of us double planking will select a wood they feel looks best. Personally, I'm using Lime veneer, measuring 1 x 5. As for making the joins stand out, you might find that as the first planking (if you are double planking) will be sanded quite a bit, the veneer on top will need little if you get the first layer right. With a bit of oil/varnish etc they would probably stand out enough. However if you wanted to add a layer of thread, I guess you could leave a small gap between the veneer planking and then lay the thread into that? Maybe someone else can offer some more ideas!  Tom

Hi guys.
I am still considering double planking am also going for the painted ship.
Does it matter, in that case, which type of wood to use?
Should I buy & fit before using the ones which DeAg supply or doeas it matter?

Bob Hi Bob, If you are painting it then my guess is that it wouldn't matter as much. You might want to get some opinions from others on here as there are varying grains that may show through, so thats something for you to consider. Not sure if Deag are supplying a second layer of planking Regards, Tom

Probably a stupid Question but here goes . Approx how many strips in Walnut how many in Lime looking at pictures probably need mahogany as well . Any one got any idea what the whole model would take to second blank the hull ?? Comments would be appreciated .

Not sure how many but if you are buying you second planking from Cornwall Model Bosts they come in 1m strips and have most widths so you may be able to get an idea from working on that principle. Someone on here may be able to give a more exact answer. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Hi Karl ........... yes Mate I do have a ruler , secondly I can certainly measure , Thought this forum was to help fellow builders , Just thought one of my fellow builders might have an idea of were the different colours are on the hull and how many APPROX strips it takes to achieve the bandings. Maybe I should just rely on my own judgement . As far as jointing is concerned the hull not really expecting to see joints, deck yes . mald matey,my last reply came out all wrong,their was supposidly humour in it,but the way you asked your questions I had no idea it concerned the banding on the hull,also I misunderstood 'bout the caulking,there are many strings on here referring to this.look up index in search and you will find all your answers,anyway sorry bout the misunderstanding, blimey 16 letters in that last word,going to have a lie down now. Hi.....
My current build is the HMS Surprise and the complete hull is approx 160 planks. The hull is longer than victory aswell. So if that helps in what you are looking for. Close ups of the banding on the Victory look like its two 5mm planks wide. And 4 on the lower band.
If you look on this build you may get an idea of the planking arrangements and how many on the banding..
