Gun ports saga continues! I did not glue the edges of the strakes (and saw no notes on this either) so in 5 places strakes came free as I cut the gun ports. I put them back with backing strips to hold the pieces in place. More a nuisance than a problem. Cutting the ports with a Dremel router bit has been very difficult and has given quite a ragged finish, nothing some wood filler can't fix. Subsequent ports will be seated before I add the strakes to the upper levels.
I am now on the second row of gun ports, seating them on the decking 40/41/42 which is probably 1mm lower than indicated in pic 16. Vol 35. In the lower pic of 16, the bottom of the hatch seems to be at the underside of the decking. Any reason I cannot raise the hatch so it also sits on the decking?
Cheers from "Slow Progress Pete"

Cheers from "Slow Progress Pete" Hi Peter, first of all have to correct you here, the gluing of the edges of the strakes to each other has been mentioned in many build diaries across the forum, it has also been mentioned on Mr T's Official Build Diary in the planking notes contained in issue 17. The bottom of the hatch will not be seen as there is a hatch doorway to be fitted at a much later stage so if you are sure of your measurements then probably best to leave as is. Take great care on measuring and marking out of the ports and hatches before cutting them out. We always say, measure twice and cut once. Using a dremel to cut the ports out requires you to ensure you have control over the cutting bit, it can skip away from you if not careful. For me it was the easiest way to cut the ports out but may not be everyone's preferred method. Can't stress enough on careful measuring, later there is a lot of ornamentation to be fitted and if the measurements are inaccurate then you may find you do not have the room needed to fit them in place. Any problems, post some pics and let us have a look. Hope this helps.. Regards Alan

Alan, thanx again for your advice, but unfortunately I only discovered the forum many months after I started and re-reading & re-reading Vol 17 I don't see a mention of gluing the edges of the strakes. It is water under the bridge now but it makes sense now of course! I am browsing the forum a lot more now and have picked up a lot of useful comments and advice. And one I have always adhered to is "measure twice, cut" once except I am more than double checking all measurements on this model.
I hope I have not made a mistake in positioning the vertical locations of the first row of gun ports. I have used the instruction in pic 3, Vol 35 which results in the gun ports sitting on the lower decking. Is this right? I put wood shims under one edge of the fore and aft gun ports to align them to the waterline.
However, in Vol 35, pic 16 shows (as I interpret) the lower edge of the second row of gun ports is 5mm above decking 40/41/42 which means I should put a 5mm spacer under each gun port & not sit them on the decking as I suggested earlier. Cheers, Peter G

Cheers, Peter G Hi Peter, am so pleased to hear you are browsing the forum, it really is packed with useful advice and tips that will help you along this journey. Your second line of gun ports do sit 5mm above the deck line. If you look at the doorway hatch you will see the base of the doorway sits on the deck line and the base of the gunports sit above this. Have looked at my build and I find the base of the first row of gunports do sit very close to the deck. Hope this helps.. Regards Alan
