Hi Kev! I'm loving all that work on the Merlin, and especially the engine mount, a beautiful scale model in it's own right!  I have a good idea of the size of that engine, when I was hunting through my old garage workroom I found a long forgotten Matchbox 1/32 Spitfire, it's a much later mark, XIX? (with the teardrop canopy and the Rolls Royce Griffon I think). I'd started the engine and some of the cockpit but nothing that can't be primered over and started again - one day perhaps!! (When the 1/72 tiddlers are done!)  Great work Kev! I've now airbrushed the main engine block and wheel housing so a bit of detail painting/weathering and there should be another update very soon. Thanks for the interest mate.

That's a work of art on the Merlin Kev  it's a shame that Tamiya didn't include 2 so that you could display one outside and your cradle is pure genius! I'll be watching Tamiya closely mate as they might be nicking your idea!  Great stuff mate Spencer

It would be a nice idea indeed if Tamiya had included a 'stand alone' display engine as well mate though with my inescapable need to always add that little bit more detail to everything I build, I think building two Merlins in this scale might drive me completely nuts!!
This is a lovely model though and I am thoroughly enjoying it, though I wish I had a bit more spare time at the moment to move it along a bit quicker? Never mind, I have got all year to build it haven't I?
How's your 1:9 Guy Gibson build going Spencer, made a start on it yet?

Hello all,
Finally managed to get some more work done on my Merlin engine and I have succeeded in finishing the main engine block and wheel housing, so I am now at least halfway through the engine build with the supercharger and carburettor assemblies up next for some super-detailing and then painting and weathering. All of the main pipes and ignition harnesses are now fitted and the engine thus far has been painted and weathered. There are still a few small pipes to add to the bottom of the engine mostly from the fuel pump to the carburettor and the odd oil pipe still to add but these will be done when the other two main assemblies are connected to the main block. I have painted and weathered the engine with a view to achieving the look of a machine that has only been off the production line about 12-18 months but has had some hard combat use and regular maintenance, so it looks in good order in places but with some wear and tear to places like the cam covers on top of the engine and around the sump amongst others?
I have to say that although this has been great fun adding all of these extra details, it has also at times been very stressful and frustrating, as all of those pipes and bits have had to be fitted as neatly as I could into some very small spaces – the last photo in the sequence below shows the obligatory ‘penny shot’ for size comparison and from that photo you can see that in 1:32 scale this is not overly large or very easy to build!! Apart from a couple of small photo-etch parts all of the detail that you see in the form of pipes, cables and their fittings, have been made by me and I think it is very worth the effort!! I have included the obligatory ‘Penny Shot’ to show just how small and compact this engine is - the photos always make these things look quite big (but they ain't)!!
I have also recently purchased a couple more aftermarket items for this build, those being a set of the Eduard ‘Fabric’ seatbelts, which I’ve never used before but they’ve had some great reviews since their launch a while back, plus I’ve also got some ‘Master’ turned brass barrels for the 20mm Hispano cannons, which are more detailed than the plastic kit parts.
I have also now taken delivery of my ‘Mitches Models’ 1:9 (200mm) WWII RAF Fighter Pilot resin figure and it’s a beautiful moulding. When I ordered it I mentioned to Ross Mitchell that I intended to change the appearance of the figures’ face as it doesn’t look much like ‘Johnnie’ Johnson, having quite skinny features with too pointed a nose and chin? I will be re-sculpting his facial features with some ‘Magic Sculp’ putty and to help me out, Ross has kindly included a second head for me to do my re-sculpting on (free of charge), which is nice of him and very much appreciated, since I will now have a spare to fall back on if I mess things up!? I’d just like to say a big thanks to Ross for that, you’re a star mate, and for anyone who doesn’t know of the fantastic figures available from ‘Mitches Models’, here’s a link to his website:

I’m certainly looking forward to getting started on the painting of that figure and it’ll give me a nice ‘in-between’ break from all this scratch-building of extra details.
