Nice work so far Carl and it looks like a fun build. I know what you mean about those 'Phillips' screw heads though and it would niggle me too!! Nice bit of OCD by filling them in by the way but is it not possible to buy some replacement miniature bolts of the correct thread gauge rather than go to all the trouble of filling and sanding each screw head, or were they originally 'domed' rivets and not bolts - in which case your solution would be fine? Just a thought as there are specialist 'model engineering' companies out there that offer such things as scale nuts and bolts I'm sure?

Kev I did look Kev, but the screws were pretty big and they screw into another metal spacer that holds the frame together so I figured just filling the heads was the best option. In the replica they shrunk fitted the front cylinder support section to the frames so there were not even bolts there.I usually use scalehardware for nuts an bolts but they didn't have anything big enough. Done Planes Done Boats So it must be trains next. Been looking at this Model from Occre for a while and unlike the kits I recently built from Model Expo there will be no added costs with import VAT as the Expo kits where imported from the USA and I can get this one in the UK Did look at the D51 but really wanted something I could finish in a reasonable time-scale. This kit is very high quality Gil.Excellent fit so far. The biggest challenge so far has been bending the metal sheets that cover most of the loco and tender.

The next part is the pilot. Now I hear you ask what is a pilot doing on a train? Well the pilot is the device on the front of the train used to deflect objects out of the trains path. Another term used is "cowcatcher" although in USA of 1860s it was far more likely a buffalo catcher. This part is made of laser cut wood.I used 5 minute epoxy to attach the two outermost beams connecting the base to the top and then used superglue to fix the rest of the beams.The fit here was excellent. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Next up the boiler. The boiler is made of a wood frame that thin metal plates. There is a change in diameter of the boiler from the rear to the front so you need to build the 3 separate parts of the boiler and then assemble them onto the frame and measure where you need to file down and align the 3 pieces. I also decided at this point to depart from the build sequence.The boiler, cab and tender are all made from a wood frame with metal coverings. I am a little nervous about bending the metal so I figured I would build all of the wood frames before moving on to the metal. I understand you trepidation regarding the boiler plates Here is a suggestion What is the diameter of the Boiler? You may find that you could use an aerosol can or similar as a former to assist when bending the boiler plates. Will let you have a go before I buy my kit Current Build:-

I do have a bending tool Gil.I bought it from Occre.It actually is just a piece of wood dowel painted black.I am glad I bought it on clearance for a couple of bucks. The metal sheets are very thin and they tend to want to crease rather than bend so you have to go really slowly to get an even bend. Wrapping the ender should be quite a lot of fun because it is a combination of straight and bent pieces.

When I have wanted to photo etch I put it on the back of a mouse mat, the soft part, and then gently start to the round object of the desired size on the photo etch, this method worked a treat, if I wanted the bend to get a small diameter I would use a small round object.
Perhaps you could use the same method to bend the boiler sheets

What is the diameter of the boiler My son is a plumber and has all sorts of different sizes of copper tubing which I could use as a replacement  Current Build:-

More progress on the boiler Now the frame is built it is time to cover the frame with the thin metal pieces.These are flat pieces that need to be bent to shape and then glued to the frame.I got to use my bending tool at last (actually it is just a piece of wood painted black). I was nervous about how well the metal (I think it is tin) would bend.It actually was pretty easy to bend.It did retain some springiness though and I had to clamp it in place until the epoxy had set. Application of the first pieces of metal.I used my miniature clamps to hold everything together.I left the clamps on for 24 hours.I tried 12 hours and one of the pieces popped off the frame. darbyvet attached the following image(s):
