Looking good MikeBigGrin The sanding does take a bit of work and with 2mm thick planks you can take a fair bit off - just be careful on the curves as it's easy to get carried away and wear them a bit thin.

Thank you, the decision will wholely depend on what the wood work looks like once the sanding is finished!!Confused

Hi Mike,
Well done, your hull looks great. From what I've seen you will be able to go either the painting or staining route. The hard work has been done, and done well ThumpUp
I bought a small "Mouse sander" this has really saved time (& energy). Just take it slow.
Kind regards,
Garth

Thanks for looking in. I have a mouse sander and was wondering about using it on the hull. How was your experience of using it?

Hi Mike
I used the mouse on the Victory hull, works well, but as Garth said very slowly and carefully. It does the job well and does not use much muscle power, rather a little brain power and patience. Enjoy.

Hi Mike,

I originally bought the sander for my Bismarck’s hull. I must have given it about 20 coats of primer, sanding between each coat.

On my Victory, I used it with course sandpaper to shape the ribs and then with progressively finer paper to sand the planking. Just as we all say – take it slowly. If you are unsure about a specific area – sand that piece by hand.

I found the pre-cut sand paper quite pricy. As I decided to leave my pins in my Victory’s hull, the sandpaper did not last very long. I then bought sheets of sand paper and double sided taped them to a worn piece that has the valcro on and then cut the triangular shape out using a craft knife. I used tape designed for carpets – it sticks really well.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,
Garth

BigGrin Mike I applaud you and your efforts on the HMS Victory (this being your first wooden ship model)!!
I just started following your build diary, but I have been subscribe to your build on youtube for a while now.

I would like to work on the Victory in the future when I have more confident with modeling over all.
I just started modeling this year, with a focus on wooden boats and ships. I am on my 3rd right now.

Any advice to give to this beginner. PS I am an artist by trade. I have a great eye and know what it take to make something special.

Anyhow keep up the great posts and work!!

Regards.

Looking good. I have been following you on YouTube. I hope my planking turns out half as good as yours.

Thanks for all the kind words and support, it really is a great build and now the planking is done, it's nice to do something different. All done now up to issue 41.

The keel is completely installed now and the initial parts of the gallery are in, the bow deck is on and I've given the whole thing a coat of varnish ready for a bit more sanding.

Lower gun deck has been installed as have the gratings. I have decided to paint her and have started with the inner bulwarks in the yellow.

On to building ten 12 pounders now!
