Sorry I'm not sure as I am still waiting for my issues too turn up, But looking at Tomicks build they are definitely 5mm wide as the gunports are 12mm and he cuts away 2 and a bit planks to get it.

Hope that helps.

Hi magppie
As I am almost defo going to double plank & paint is lime strip the best so as not to show to much grain?
Also should I buy & fit the lime strip first, then lay over the Deag strip, or does it matter? Confused
Thanks

Bob

Hi Bob,
Limewood is softwood which doesn't show much grain if sanded with fine grade paper. As for Double planking, you can plank over the Limewood with no problems but you would be better with 1.5mm Planks and the veneer being 1mm thick. The Deag strips are Basswood which is the same as Limewood.

Hope that helps you .
Cheers Chris...

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Hi Bob

What I'm meaning is , If you are double planking you would need to forget the deag planks and replace with 1.5mm planks otherwise the ship will be 1mm wider everywhere.

What I mean by veneer, the top layer of plank it being walnut or mahogany etc. It is better to be 1mm thick. any thinner would mean very little sanding...

Hope that gives you the info..
Thanks Chris...

be very with the veneer sanding, I got a little heavy handed with my HMS Endeavour, and went down to the planks. Huge bummer, I ended up having to replace some, and the hull is now a bit patchy in places. I tell myself it is a replica of the repairs done fy the crew when she ran aground on the barrier reef...LOL

Hi, most hobby shops will stock the appropriate spares. Otherwise, here is an online shop I found, looking for parts for a soon to happen scratch build, it may help.

Just another thing i have just thought. Do I need a veneer if I am going to paintConfused
The main reason I am going to double plank is that I am no way confident with my first attempt at planking as this is my first time. And this is to expensive to cock up.Crying

Thanks for the vote of confidence ColinThumpUp
As you can imagine this is one great wop off learning curve.
For something that is probably going to end up costing close to a grand eventualy (as has been mentioned before in other posts) I want to get it spot on.
I'd prefer it to look "pre" Trafalgar rather than "post" if you know what I mean.

All you have too remember is take it slow do one plank at a time and check and double check the fit of it first. Then you will have no problems. I had never planked a ship before when I made the San francisco 2 and that one is single planked. My HMS Fly is double planked which will also be my first Double planked.

You can do it if you take it easy Bob.BigGrin BigGrin

all my models have been double planked so far, like you i will be double planking the victory as no matter how many ive done (Five) some bits still dont look right with the mistakes i made, so a second planking helps hide these and its neater, i wouldnt think a millimeter or so would make a great difference overall.Confused
