I am at issue number 20 - planking takes forever! Have encountered a slight problem and need some advice. I should have read Tomick's official build diary before adding the last three planks to the side of the hull. Tomick tapered planks 8, 9 and 10 so that the 10th plank neatly reached the the bottom edge of the stern. Unfortunately I did not taper these planks with the result that my 9th plank reaches the bottom of the stern.
Should I leave it at 9 planks? I see that in issue 24 they describe how to make stern reinforcements which I would need to do before fitting a 10th planking strip to each side of the hull. The instructions say that planks 11 and 12 need tapering where they meet the stern section - perhaps I should do this with planks 10 and 11?
I might be labouring this a bit and should just carry on planking - after all I will eventually end up covering the whole hull even if I get there a little bit differently to what the instructions say.

Hi Simon, without seeing a pic of your problem it is difficult to ensure you are getting the correct advice. However, here's what I think.... The reason planks 8,9 & 10 are tapered is to assist in manouvering around the curve of the stern smoothly. As this build is double skinned the planks you are applying will not be seen and if you have reached the bottom of the stern in 9 then you may get away with it providing you are able to maintain the shape of the stern. It may also cause you problems in fitting later planks into the area that is left. If it were me, I would remove planks 8 & 9, taper them as instructed and then continue from there. To remove the planks is straight forward if you have used PVA glue, simply use a small paint brush and some hot water. Paint around the glue joints and after a few minutes the glue will soften enabling you to gently remove the planks. A quick clean up after that and you back on track. Not a big task as you are only removing 4 planks in total. Hope this helps..
Regards
Alan

Thanks Gandale - I have done exactly as you have described and the finish looks pretty good. When I work out how to post pictures I will show you. Simon
