Hello kpnuts,I could be wrong but I think she is the same ship after she was refitted and renamed the royal sovereign
Man he took his time in the sun
Had a dream to understand
A single grain of sand
He gave birth to poetry
But one day will cease to be
Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

Hi Ken, Royal Sovereign is the same ship and named as such after a complete rebuild. In 1697 whilst undergoing repairs the SOTS was engulfed in flames reducing her to nothing but a shell, cause of this fire is speculated to be an overturned candle. Around 1701, the timbers that could be used from the SOTS were used to build the 100 gun ship that became the Royal Sovereign. So in effect you have the same ship but a later version. Hope this helps..

Thanks Alan, so is the airfix artwork correct was she repainted black and gold or is she as I've seen on here blue and gold, also do you know how accurate airfix's kit is, I already know I will have to fabricate either part decks for the cannons or make the recesses deeper to try and make the cannons look more real.
Sorry getting confused there I was looking at the soliel royal, forget the colour confusion,

Just hoping the sellers description is OK some pics of the prow shows the figure head is snapped off, that iscsupposed to be the only damage and the bag is sealed so there should be no missing bits, if that is the only damage it's an easy fix, keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

Hi Ken, from what I can gather Airfix first released the kit in 1963 and from then on it has been re-boxed many times with different artwork on the boxes. I haven't as yet found any information on these kits having been released as re-tooled versions so would have to conclude accuracy may be questionable. Also having never seen closely an Airix kit of this model then it would be difficult for me to give any definitive answer on its accuracy so can only give this as my opinion, plus of course you don't say which edition of the kit you have managed to aquire. Should you decide you wish to enhance the kit further then I would recommend you carry out some online research with Wikipedia being a good place for you to start..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Royal_Sovereign_(1701)

You could also google Airfix Royal Sovereign kit reviews where you will also find some useful information.

Hope this helps..

Regards

Alan

Ken

I can sense the joy in your post - it's great being able to re-kindle something from our younger days.

Think I shared this once but when I was around 9 ( a long long time ago it feels) our local post office come corner shop stocked a few airfix kits. One day they put above the alcove between the shop and the post office side the airfix 4 stroke engine.

Cannot remember the price but I so wanted it. We were about to go on holiday to Scarborough for 2 weeks and Dad said if you have pocket money left over you can get it when you get home. Worst 2 weeks holiday ever but managed to keep my money only to find we got back too late on the Saturday and the post office was shut.

Had to wait another day until the Monday to get it but boy what a feeling that was.

Point of the story being (like you) airfix did a re- release and while the purchase was made with older eyes the sense of remembering was simpke great.

I hope you will not be disappointed with your purchase and wish you well with your build.

Happy Modelling

That should give you quite a bit more gilding practice Ken and if it's as good as your 'La Reale De France' ship build it'll be a cracker!! Cool ThumpUp

Hi all well i've fixed the bowsprit

to be honest I dont think I will be staring this before my hols in a weeks time but I am excited by the prospect.
the moulding for such an old kit I think is outstanding, its certainly equal to the Heller La reale.
