Hello all, I just got my first set of parts and am getting ready to start my build. This will be my first significant wooden ship build. I have lots of plastic models under my belt (all kinds not just ships) but have only built one wooden ship before. About 15 years ago I tackled the Model Shipways kit for the New York Pilot Boat, Phantom. It was a solid hull kit that I waterlined on a table saw, carefully, and it came out quite good. Of course fifteen years and periodic dusting of the shelf it was on have taken their toll. One of the navigation lights is missing, the very tops of both masts have been broken off, and a few dead eyes have come loose but all in all it's still looks good. I'm excited to start this one but not having as much experience as I'm sure many of the members on this forum have I'd welcome the opportunity to ask questions. I expect I'll get answers as so far it seems like the forum is peopled with a friendly lot. Given that, here's the first ones. First, in the States we get monthly parts deliveries rather than weekly as appears to be the case across the pond. Each monthly delivery seems to include 10 packs - my first delivery is of packs 1 through 10 and the build instructions/magazine is a single volume - yet the instructions are still provided based on each pack as the next assembly step(s). So, given that I have received all of the parts for the false keel, does it make sense to assemble the entire keel before attaching the first bulkhead as shown in the instructions for pack 1? Second, as I look through the official build log, it appears as if there is a bearding line and rabbet at the stern area of the false keel. Is this something done after pack 10 or am I misinterpreting what I'm seeing in the photo? If it is a bearding line, would it make sense to wait until after drawing and carving it before attaching the first bulkhead? Many thanks in advance for any helpful advice. Dominick Dominick

Hi Dominick Welcome to Modelspace and you have certainly made a great choice with the Vic! With regard to your question, not sure what part of the official build you are looking at but there is no beading or rabbet line. There is a requirement to narrow down the false keel at the stern following the frames and this is done at the faring stage, perhaps this is what you mean? (pic below) If I have misread what you mean then please post some more info as to which part of the build you are looking at. Good luck with it anyway Steve stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Hi Dominick, first of all a very warm welcome to the forum, it is a pleasure to have you on board and I'm sure you'll love putting this iconic ship together. .. You are correct in your assumption, this forum is full of members who are only too willing to render assistance where required. If you require any assistance then all you have to do is ask and someone will answer. Of course it's always easier to give assistance if you also post a build diary with pics where we can watch your progress.. . As for your first question, you are of course free to build this kit in any order you so wish and yes, it probably does make sense to join all the pieces of the keel together before attaching the bulkheads, or ribs as they are sometimes referred to. However, as this is your first venture into the world of partworks I would recommend you tackle the build as per the instructions and in the order as laid out. This way it is unlikely you will miss anything out. I think the instruction for the Victory are probably the best there is, they have been put together with beginners as well experienced modellers in mind. Also, refer to Mr T's Official Build Diary to clarify each of the steps you need to take before carrying out the tasks. I would also recommend the use of a build jig, this will help to ensure the keel is kept straight which is a critical part of any of these builds. Steve has covered the answer to your second question so no need for me to repeat here.. Lastly, enjoy the experience, ask if you're unsure and the best of luck with it... Hope this helps..
