I was haveing a wee problem with my build as the bow bit was not sitting right but sorted it out rest was easy to sort out glad i was all in line not all over the place just need to fill gaps now your build is looking good mate here is a picture of mine so far

Hi Billbo, glad you got it sorted out. Thought the problems a few of us had was down to the replacement parts we used for the front end conversion. Seeings as you had a problem as well it looks to me in my opinion, that there's some sort of manufacturing hiccup in this area, but all's well that ends well.
Nice going with the build Billbo, hope we'll see more pics as you progress.

Hi David, got mine yesterday but got 2 issue 31's and no 30. CS sending 30 out so I will be only able to do 28 & 29 this weekend.

It's frustrating when that happens, especially when we're only getting one or two parts per issue, but look on the bright side, at least you've got yourself a bit more breathing space to 'psych' yourself up for all those vents that will need drilling out in issue 30 BigGrin

BUILD UPDATE #28

Hello again my friends,

This week's update is for issue 28 and covers the fitting of part #75, the plastic cladding with the contours of the rear end of the saddle tank.
First I had to remove the part #79 (from issue #27) which was held in place temporarily with sellotape which wasn't a good idea because it left a sticky residue on the surface of the part which had to be cleaned off, so I must remember not to use sellotape again (I had some masking tape which I'd put away somewhere, but as there was a roll of sellotape on the desk I took the lazy option and I paid the priceBlushing ).
Anyway, part #75 was cut off from it's sprue, cleaned up and offered up for a test fit. No extra work was required as it sat nicely in it's correct position, so it was glued in place with thick C/A glue.
Part #79 from issue #27 was then offered up to check the fit and I found that transverse frame #33 needed filing down on it's inside edge to allow the part to fit correctly, but it still left a small gap where it mated with part #75 so after the assembly was dry, it was filled with plastic putty.
Just as a note here, I shall not be smoothing down until all of the cladding and planking of the hull is finished.

Yes, she's certainly taking shape now and the parts going onto the frame are now starting to make her more rigid - she was a rather 'floppy old thing' - and had to keep her in a jig so as to keep her line nice and straight.
The only issue I have really is the small amount of parts we are receiving each week and the drawn out construction period (150 weeks for this one).
I'm going to be an old man before this one is finished.BigGrin

Hi David, she is definitely starting to take shape and I know what you mean about the the number of parts. You do have all those vents to drill out in issue 30 and the work load should increase with planking and painting in upcoming issues.

Yes, I love being reminded about that particular jobBigGrin
Not looking forward to that - there's over 100 slots this time.
However, I'm at the moment trying to find an easier way to do the job, and so far I've come up with a log by an American builder who built a plastic version of a type VII/C u-boat, and what he did was to paint the inside part of the mouldings where the vents were with acetone which softened up the plastic just enough to enable the vents to be opened up without too much hassle. I've yet to find a suitable acetone to use though - I tried some of my partners' nail polish remover on the part of the molding which we aren't using (the piece which covers the torpedo room), but that didn't work very well; in fact it didn't soften it up at all.
So anyway, I'm still looking

David, I would expect the thickness of the parts on a plastic kit would be a lot less than that of the parts on this build. The amount of acetone you would need to sufficiently soften these parts would probably distort or melt the whole part. I tried immersing a piece of the sprue in pure acetone for a few minutes and it barely softened the surface.
I would say it would be safer to persevere with a drill and file.

BUILD UPDATE #29

Welcome back to this week's build update.
Another single part to fit this week, part #74 (the right-hand rear cladding for the machine room cutaway).
After removing part #78 which was held in place temporarily, part #74 was cut away from the sprue, cleaned and offered up for a test fit. A small amount of filing of the longitudinal strengthener #86 was necessary to make the part sit correctly, after which it was glued into place with thick C/A glue and held with rubber bands until set.
Part #78 was then glued back into place and the 2 parts should butt up against each other in an 'L' shaped join, but as with the left-hand side, a small gap was left which needed filling with plastic putty.
Well, that's it for now. The next update will be issue #31 (the start of the planking) to allow me more time to work on the part supplied with issue #30 (part #80) which has over 100 ballasting vents which need opening up. Thank you all for the comments and thanks for looking in.

In my humble opinion, it's such a pity that this one will take so long to complete when the addition of a couple of extra parts in each issue could have easily reduced the build time from approaching 3 years to a more reasonable length of time.
But as my old Tai Chi master used to say, "There must be a reason"BigGrin

BUILD UPDATE #31

Hi again friends, it's that time of the week for another update on the U-96.
This week I'm skipping issue #30 which contains the stern cladding because the number of ballasting vents to be drilled out is quite daunting.
So I'm moving on to the first planking session in issue #31, laying planks on the right-hand side (looking towards the bow) on the upper part of the hull between the forward torpedo room to the end of the machine room.
The issue contains 30 strips of 1x3x248mm wood which needs to be cut to size so this was the opportunity to try out my recently acquired Amati plank cutter. This worked exceptionally well, slicing through the strips like 'a knife through butter'. So much easier than using a mitre block and razor saw and well worth every penny.
Once the 6 rows of planks had been laid, there was the tricky little job of infilling the slight gap between the last row and the longitudinal strengtheners, made more difficult because of their angle (I'm guessing about 30 degrees off square with the hull). Cutting long slivers of planks to fit took almost as long as the planking itself because not only did they need tapering but also beveling at the edge as well to accommodate that angle.
