Hello, this is my review of this rather stunning kit, if you like this sort of period.

Mary Rose has just been added to my stash and completes my Portsmouth Treo along with the Diag Victory and the Billings Warrior. The first of 3 new kits I have on the way and the first of two Calder Craft kits.

Just a bit about the kit. Calder Craft have spent a lot of time with the Mary Rose association and had access to a lot of primary reference material making this not only the most accurate Mary Rose model available but undoubtably the most accurate model of a Tudor period ship. Much of the models visible construction mirrors the actual construction for example the joints on the cannon carriages are in the same places as the original.



So whats in the box?
The first thing that hits you is the cloud of sawdustMellow all the parts are CNC rather than laser cut. This prevents having to clean up all the burnt edges and also allows for additional milling of the parts, but is a more expensive process so adds to the kit price and you need to give the kit parts a good hoover LOL
once you remove the instruction book the second thing to hit you is the huge amount of wood in the kit.




There are 17 bags that contain the various parts and thread needed. I have to say the castings are really nice good quality and probably better than the originals! the wood blocks are very nice too with a good original looking patina.







The strip wood is all good quality, primarily walnut. the hull is double planked the first layer in lime, decks are tanganyika. there is some brass wire that has been supplied with the down to keep it straight rather than coiling it and you having to straighten it - its the little things that make you smile isn't it BigGrin




There is a lot of CNC sheets, some ply others solid wood and all good quality. some tiny details on some sheets like the cannon trucks and some well represented decorations too.












Accompanying the instruction booklet are 8 sheets of plans. plans are all good and clear with some exploded dios to help understanding of construction. that said this is by no means a beginners kit you need some good technical knowledge to take in the instructions and follow the build.









Everything in the box is good quality and well thought out. However there are some disappointments. there is not an option to add sails, not an issue for me but will be for some. more disappointing though is the lack of flags and banners. Mary Rose would have been covered with them. as the flag ship she would have had multiple flags decorating the length of the forecastle. she would have been a formidable and very colourful sight sailing into battle. So Calder Craft have delivered on an accurate representation of the ship and then just not iced the cake.

would i recommend it to anybody wanting to build Mary Rose? absolutely yes, cracking kit.

thanks Alan, won't be soon i am afraid but I will be kicking off a new ship soon as i picked up a commission from within the family, more on that soon.

She looks a great kit and I can agree with you about the sawdustLaugh Blink the Agamemnon is the same but also equal like you have said in the quality of the parts and wood provided. The plans provided look like there along the same lines as provided in mine, 9 large sheets for 'egg's n bacon'. She should be an interesting build when you get round to it will look in when you do.

That looks a fantastic kit you've got there Jase!! I'm going to enjoy following this build and I know you'll do this one real justice mate. Been interested in the Mary Rose ever since they started excavating the wreck back in 1971. Good luck with this build Jase...Can't wait to see this one come together.

Thanks John , few things to do first i am afraid. but if your interested in the Mary Rose you might want to get this from the library I am reading it at the moment very interesting
