Something many modellers do is pack the bow formers out with balsa wood and then shape when rubbing down. The planks will then lay better.

I can't remember which diaries show this but someone may pop up hopefully.

Certainty something I will do next time.

Hi Dominick, it looks to me like you have added the shims between former 8 and the keel. Do not glue these in position as they are not needed. Further into the build there are two ply fillets that fit in between former 8 and the keel so if you glue the shims there then you'll have problems fitting the ply inserts. Cool Cool .. Otherwise everything is looking good so well done.....

Alan,

Thanks, you may have just saved my bacon as the expression goes. I will not glue them but leave them press fitted for now to keep the keel straight until I get the fillets.

Thanks again.

Happy to be of help Dominick, think now you can already see the positive aspects of keeping a build diary, it allows us to perhaps prevent some of the potential mishaps before they happen. Keep it going, I'll be watching all the way.....

Ok, I completed the planking jig for the first of the ship's boats today. It all came out nice and square and is looking good. I am waiting for the CA to fully cure before I sand down the frames to fair it. I test fitted a plank to the jig and it seems as if the shoulders on frames 9 and 12 are a little high by about 1 mm to 1.5 mm. When I put the plank on it sits on the ledge of those two formers (both sides) and is up off of the others by the difference in height. I assume I should level those two with the others as part of the fairing process, is that correct?

John,

Thanks. I have seen that in a few articles and books I have read. I will look into it once I see about the fillets that get installed.

Hi Dominick, I would reduce the shoulder height on both those ribs to bring the first planking row into line. When you do this and when you fair the ribs, do this very gently as the ribs are very fragile. Take your time with it... Cool Cool

I started on the first of the ship's guns - a cannon. I notice in the official build diary that these get pinned to the deck later on. Given that, is it best to drill the holes for the pins now, when pinning them, or perhaps to glue them with a little CA instead of using pins? Also, how far in should the wedge be inserted - basically, at what angle to horizontal should the gun be to properly/realistically align with the gun ports?

Hi,
Some nice work thereBigGrin I used CA glue to fit my cannons rather than pins, just semed easier.
The wedge / gun angle on mine puts the gun barrell practically horizontal, this seems to match my gunport lower edge just right, btw there are 16 fully rigged cannons plus 2 stowed at the bowBigGrin

Steve,

Thanks. I've looked at your builds as well, amazing work, certainly something for me to aspire to.

I think I will glue them as well. Seems silly to risk damaging them by drilling holes and pushing in pins. I imagine each wedge may come out slightly different so I may store them all with the cannons and glue them in as the cannons are mounted on the deck. This way I can probably keep them all consistent.

I hand painted this one, not too bad, but I think in the future I may wait until I have a few and airbrush them in a batch.

Hi Dominick
glad you have put up a build diary and you've made a great start, but the most important question about it is what single malt are you drinkaling while building The Royal Navy's flagship ? could it be a Jura, a singleton, an Aberlour ?

Paul,

Thanks. It's one of my favorites, Oban, an Islay - I also like Laphroig, the smokier and peatier the better.

Gents,

Thanks for the kind comments.

I made a little more progress today. Cut the channel in the anchor stock and glued the halves together and eased the corners. I still need to round the ends as shown in the official build log.

Right now the anchor isn't glued in it's just press fit. I figure it will be easier to complete the stock first and then glue the anchor in. I plan to go the heavy paper route as I think it will look more like iron banding than the thread. We have some nice heavy stock at work and a wheel type paper cutter that will give some nice, thin, even strips.

Even though the stock was painted black at Trafalgar, I just think the walnut looks way too nice contrasted with the black - so the walnut stays. BigGrin

More to come
