It's 40 yrs Since the First Nimitz-class carrier was born. They were designed to have a 50-year service life. USS Nimitz, the lead ship of the class, was 13th May 1972 and commissioned on 3 May 1975, the tenth and last of the class USS George HW Bush (CVN 77) and was commissioned in January 2009.

Other hulls are: USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69) – Oct 1977; USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) – Mar 1982; USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) – Oct 1986; USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) – Nov 1989; USS George Washington (CVN 73), Jul 1992; USS John C Stennis (CVN 74) – Dec 1995, USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) – July 1998 and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) – July 2003.

Nimitz-class aircraft carriers were constructed between 1968 and 2006 at Newport News Shipbuilding Company, in Newport News, Virginia, in the largest drydock in the western hemisphere, dry dock 12, now 2,172 feet (662 m) long after a recent expansion.

The Nimitz Class aircraft carriers are the largest warships ever built. With over 6,000 personnel (crew and aircrew), the carrier has a displacement of 102,000t, and a flight deck length of 332.9m.
