Ian, Dave, and Alan, Thank you all so much. You have no idea how much I'm enjoying this. It may not seem like a lot has happened because it's been prime, sand, prime, sand, etc. However, here's the launch primed, sanded painted white, rubbing strips applied and oar locks cut in. I think my next step will be to mask off for the yellow ochre and spray that and then mask and paint the black stripe after that since it will easily cover both the white and yellow. It appears from the pictures in the instructions and the official build that the keel and the transom remain white, is that correct? DSoldano attached the following image(s): Dominick

Thanks Gents, I really appreciate the votes of confidence especially coming from you guys. I've seen your work and it's darn impressive. I finished the base color on the launch then masked off and airbrushed the yellow ochre. I bought the Victory paint set so I wasn't sure how it would lay down. I may have thinned it (with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner) a bit too much when I sprayed it so I didn't get as opaque coverage as I would like but all-in-all it went on very nicely. When I get the mix right it's going to work great. Although I sprayed the interior the coat was a bit thin for me so I brush painted it. After that I remasked for the black. Then I sprayed Vallejo Model Air Black. A very little bleed through but the story I'm telling is that it was painted after the men were issued a double ration of rum. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  I want to give it a few days to cure and then give it a protective clear coat. I usually use Model Master Flat but it seems to be going on with more of a sheen than I like lately. I could hit it with Vallejo Matt Varnish but that is usually dead flat and that may be too much. Any suggestions? I also did some work on the Barnabus Vampire Van to get it off the bench. It's one of the old AMT kits with molds from the early 60s so nothing has been easy with it. I'm about ready to toss it - but I've put too much into it to give up.  So while the launch is curing over the next few days I'll plan to build the accesories for the launch, anchor, oars, rope coil, rudder, mast, etc. I'll probably start the carronade as well. Thanks Gents, I really appreciate all of the support and encouragement. It's been a great help. Hopefully my posts will help and inspire other beginners. I completed a bit more on the launch today. I painted the oars, assembled and painted the anchor, tapered and painted the mast, built the rudder and attached the hinges (are they called pintels?) to the stern, and made the rope coil. I thinned the glue a bit for the coil and it soaked through on one side (live and learn) but it still looks pretty good. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. I do have a question though; in preparing to make the duckboards, I notice in the pictures in the directions and the official build log, that the photoetch has a finished rather than ragged edge, how was that achieved? I also found online that Mig Productions makes a brass blackening solution and ordered some. I'll test it on the scraps and post a report on how it works. I also made and assembled the floorboards off the model using a template. More on that, and photos, tomorrow Dominick

Ok, so here is the completed floorboards and thwart supports installed in the launch. I made the paper template so I could build the floor outside the boat and then just drop it in. The inside of my frames wasn't as wide as what was in the instruction manual or official build. In fact, it was about 2 full boards narrower. I may have a newer version of the kit as it appears the rudder is different also - my rudder had the slots for the hinges already cut. Anyway, no worries, it's looking good. After I made the template I cut each board to length and shaped them against the template. Then I chamfered the edges - it appears that that is what was done in the official build and I really liked the look - so that all of the individual boards would show. Then I glued them up side by side, did any final shaping, primed and painted them and installed the completed floorboards in the launch with CA. I realize they don't look exactly like the ones in the instructions as I used more of a rounded taper but I'm happy with it. Then I pre-bent and cut the thwart supports, painted them and installed them 5mm below the edge of the boat using a little CA. I made the rudder and other accessories and painted them all up. I also made a jig to hold the keel straight while I add the frames, decks, and do the initial planking. I started with a piece of composite board shelving cut to about 31 inches long. Then made a straight line right down the middle using a T-Square. After that I clamped my level down the middle so I would have a good alignment surface for the L-Brackets. I checked, and trued up any brackets that weren't a perfect 90 degrees using a carpenters square - most weren't - and then aligned them to places on the keel where they wouldn't interfere with any frames. After that I marked the holes for each bracket and used an awl to make a starter hole dead center of each bracket screw hole. Next I drilled the holes and screwed in the brackets, and re-checked all of the brackets for a perfect 90 degrees. Then I used the keel as a thickness guide to line up the brackets on the other side and marked, started, drilled, and screwed those in after checking them for a perfect 90 degree angle. It's a nice tight press fit - i tapped the keel down very lightly with a rubber mallet yet I can still get the keel out with just a little force. If it swells it will be really tight but I have a small right angle screwdriver that I can use to unscrew the brackets on one side in need be. I just need to be careful with the glue. Shelf - $8.00 Brackets - $12.00 Having a nice straight keel that won't twist or bend as I'm truing up and planking the hull - Priceless DSoldano attached the following image(s): Dominick

Anyway. a few minutes with the Dremel and a coarse sanding drum and viola...I am screwed no more. It now sits nicely on the bench and won't scratch up the bench top - or me.
